I've rebuilt a Giant Rincon, and after re-cabling I'm having trouble getting it to hit every gear on the freewheel.

The closest I have is it hits every gear on the stand, except for the second highest gear. On this one it sorta rides on top of the gear, and after a few revolutions finally snaps into place.

The RD appears straight, but is rather beat up. (Worn to the point where "SUNTOUR" is hardly recognizable). Should I think about replacing it? I'm assuming only another Suntour one would work with the indexed shifters?

Where have I gone wrong?

Also, the FD doesn't throw the chain, but when riding you usually have to shift up to the big ring and back down to the middle ring.

1. Go through the Park Tool site tutorial on adjusting derailleurs, its outstanding.

2. What is the brand of freewheel you are using? Suntour has different spacing than most others.

3. Suntour indexing was a weak point for them.

4. Check your housing cuts. Are they clean? Did you use indexed housings, or the cheap generic stuff?

5. If your shifting is really close, often a small barrel adjustment is all it takes.

Nice used RDs are pretty cheap. A beat up RD may be more about the hanger being bent, which will give you problems as well.
