Cyclocross - Franken-question - Trigger shifters

Anyone ever fit trigger shifters onto road drop bars?
Low budget build =
I've got 9speed trigger shifters and would like to use them for my build.
I was thinking of carefully grinding off some of the thickness of the clamp so it slides onto the road bars slightly larger diameter. It's not a structural mount so I was thinking it just might work.

Anyone else do, see, try or have any experience with this? Trigger shifters on the top bars and SLR road levers on the road drops would be a free-to-me way to get 9 speed. I'll already be using a full mtb drivetrain: triple cranks/FD/RD

It might be easier to find a set of old road handlebars that have the MTB diameter. I have a '77 Gitane that came with 25.4 mm bars. I've never tried putting MTB components on them, but I would guess it might work.

The shifters I have are beat and free. The indicator window is broken off of one.
I have several bars here that I'll try, most older bars are not 44 cm wide. I suppose it's best to try other options before hacking... but it's not as fun that way. ;)

Have you thought of getting a Minura Space grip and mounting the shifters to that? They are less than $10.

I suppose if there are some that barely rise off the bar then that might work.
I also see some of the Drop bar extensions that fit on flat bars. That's still costing me money though.

Yeah, you may as well go ahead and grind if the shifters are on their last legs anyway.

Origin 8 have those drops bar ends.

I've used them on touring/commuter bikes with internal gear hubs with grip shifters, so I can mount the shifter on the flat bar but can still have drops with road aero brake levers.... works fine for me.

Have some pics? How is it to ride on the bends? It looks like the mounting knobs would get in the way of your palm.

See what I can do about pics as the bars are off that bike now.
I had them covered with bar tape and the "mounting knobs" didn't seem to be a problem.

Yes! How did those feel? How did you wrap the bar tape around them?

Seems nice to have a good flat top grip all the way to the bends. I could then have the triggers on the top and road brakes like you show.
Could make them a good 46cm wide too

They feel OK to me.
I just started at the bottom of the drops and worked my way up around like usual until I finished. At the ends of the flat bar I crossed over a few times...just enough so I could push the caps in. It's a bit bulky where the bar end bolts on, but it's acceptable to me.
Whatever width your flat bar is..........

I think I'll try them out. Should do fine for what he's going to be using it for.
