The fastest i've gone was with a tailwind going down a hill about 1/2 mile long at 42mph.

I hit a new personal best a couple nights ago at 39.7mph. I didn't even realize I was going that fast, I just knew I was out of gears.

Why? I know my top speeds because my computer records them but they don't matter. Matter of fact, I wasn't trying or even pedaling while hitting these speeds. I use downhills as recovery, save energy for the next climb.:thumb:

This is an old subject, but popular. I've hit 39 on flat ground, and 53 on a downhill. In fact, all but one of my recumbents have gone 53 mph. Once, I was coasting down a hill at 49 mph, decided that wasn't good enough, and spun my 58/11 high gear until I hit 51.

Downhill speeds are nothing to boast about, it just depends on the gradient and your nerves. I have never got to more than 39kph on the flat.

You are correct. I am way below a novice on a bicycle, but on very steep inclines, I have been known to pass cars on my Raleigh. No clocking of the speed, but I know it was up there. No, I am not nervy just my other hobby/sport makes me use to speed.. :)

I agree. I don't even remember downhill speeds. On the flat 35.5MPH. Held it for all of 5 seconds. That is the day a gained a new gut feel (in more ways than one, if I had tired to maintain the speed I would have puked) for just how good the guys who have come close to the hour record are.

I'm faster than a speeding bullet...;)
My speed records were set as a teen on the 10-spd Schwinn; the fastest pedaling speed, on flat, was 35 mph.
Downhill, 56. Was in & out of the town called Knight's Corners, IN, before I knew it was there.
Back in the day my fastest descent was 57 mph, at least that I know of. I didn't have a computer at the time but the guy I was riding with did. More recently I haven't done anything better than 42. I don't have enough road sans intersections around here to do much better. Also, I'm older and meeker now.

I've been up to the mid-40's (mph!)downhill!!(He said boastfully.)

62 MPH with touring gear coming down the hill outside of Lompoc into Santa Barbara. I'm sure I hit it only briefly.
Good thing I did not see it when I hit it, I would have freaked out.

Not a personal best, but on BRAT last fall, one of the other cyclists had stopped in Mercer (TN) and was sitting on the porch of the general store talking to the locals. He related how there were two fancy racing bikes on the trip. Just about then, I came screaming through town, doing about 35 mph. Jaws dropped and nobody talked for the ten seconds it took for me to ride off out of sight.

110 mph in my Honda Civic with freshly aligned & balanced wheels on a brand-new roadway through the ranch country of northwest Nebraska. The little bugger wouldn't go any faster... ;)
On a bike, on the flats, with no tailwind to speak of and nobody to draft off of -- 31 mph. That was hard for me. Much easier to do it on Constitution Ave. on the downhill stretch on the north side of the Capitol.

31 mph that's impressive on flat ground you must be a strong rider the best I could do is 27 mph flat.

I'm not saying that I was able to hold it for very long... ;) Just enough for me to look down at the speedometer and go, "Did I crack it? *puff puff* how about now?... *huff puff huff*... ok, THERE's 30.... *huff puff wheeze gasp*"

Even for a second 31 mph is still no easy feat sir.

Speed in a straight line isn't nearly as fun as speed through some turns, though. That's when I feel like I'm in a low-flying plane. I had a kick one time leading another cyclist along a mostly-deserted but narrow MUP (for you locals, Mt. Vernon Trail south of Old Town) that had its share of bends and trees just off the edge of the asphalt. We probably maxed out at 25, but it felt a lot faster, kind of like what I think it'd feel like to fly a small homebuilt plane along the Nurburgring's old course.

39 mph on flat ground you sir are a champion but that's crazy you must have legs of steel or iron....................or just really strong legs.
I've gotten my bike up to about 110 MPH on flat ground.
It was strapped to a hitch rack on the back of a Miata at the time...

Ah turns! On this mtn road descent, I've hit 42. This video is holding at about 30 through the turns. Usually cars move aside to let the riders pass on the switchbacks., This girl kept slowing me down. At 26 seconds into the video, you can see the smoke from the tailpipe as she guns it when I catch up................ again!:p

I hit a new personal best last night at 35.5 on the flat ground with no wind. I've now managed that, and 39.7 on a downhill (don't get many hills in Houston).

Almost. I got it as a broken frame, fixed the frame and built it up from there.
I've hit 55 once going down a steep, short hill-scary but exciting. Now that I'm older than that speed, I find myself considering risk reward factors and am much less inclined to speed down that same incline. Rats!
