How good of a player are you?
give gnuchess (http://www.gnu.org/software/chess/) a try.

not good - i used to play a little as a kid, but never really grasped it.
You should be able to find a used Chessmaster cheap at a software store. It'll prob be Chessmaster 7000 give or take a thou. I had one once, it has a tutorial. There are a bunch of stand alone chess playing machines; they usually have tutorials, some quite good.
There are websites, with reviews, dedicated to them.
Have you looked at Tucows? There are quite a few decent games here with tutorials;
