Half clips are fine for SS but not recommended for FG.

I've really never understood why these exist.

A lot of commuters that come into my shop use them. I asked one guy and he said they keep his feet from sliding forward on his pedals in wet weather. Makes some sense, I guess. Most casual riders that come in also feel they "need" them, but it's bunk. They usually end up buying them even when we try telling them they're unnecessary.

i have a pair that I took off my friend's vintage road bike (she doesn't want it). Thought I'll find a purpose for them but no. Ended up in my parts box forever.

Ok for SS I suppose, but for FG you really need effective foot retention, and half-clips aren't going to provide that.

They aren't that bad if you aren't skidding. I think the longer plastic ones work better than the metals ones. Better than no clips...

This is it. You can push forward and down. Better than no clips.

Anecdotal:

My ex-girlfriend's twin sister had an old mixte road bike and was frustrated with not being able to keep her feet on the pedals better. I gave her clips, she freaked. I then set her up with half clips and it worked for her. If one wants just a little more security, they're not bad. But any more than just a little more and you're much better off with clips and straps.

your right, I have a pair on my Maddy 'cause I got them for free and didn't have another set of clips and straps sitting around.
