Just a reminder, do your homework 'before' starting a project. I was reassembling some old cantilever brakes and greased the mounting bolts 'before' I read in by maintenance book not to grease the threads. How big a deal is this? Will just wiping the threads of grease be enough or should I do this and use thread lock?

I've done this before accidentally and never had any problems with it. You could probably use a q-tip to clean out some of it from the threads if you want to. Most of those bolts have a blue thread-locker compound that works fine even with a tiny amount of grease IME.

2nd problem. I can't remember which spring goes where. Silver on one side, gold on the other. I believe I read that it makes a difference. These are Shimano BR-MT62's if that helps. thanks.
