Anyone know what the big pro teams use for roof racks on their team cars? I really like the design of them but dont recall ever seeing something similar in the flesh. Or maybe its just like a typical Thule setup with 10 carriers on one roof as opposed to just 2 or 3 for the civilians?
I ask because Im looking at a new car (VW Golf TDI) and would like to get a roof rack to carry 4 bikes as I always seem to have a full car going to races. For the stage races, Ill just throw the TT bikes on the roof and the road bikes on a Saris Bones trunk rack.

I think they are are, as you guessed, large thule or yakama and also I am sure quite a few are custome made. if you can get wider (longer) load bars with your Thule you can put more bikes on the roof, but watch your head!
I have a great pic of the Campi neutral support car with rack that hangs down the side on each side with a bike ready to go.

Alternate directions of your bike holders. Even with a 48" bar you should be able to then fit 4 bikes on your roof rack. You could always upgrade to the next size bars, and put the extra bar towards the passenger side, and always ride in the right lane if your on a highway. But, I would check legalities of having anything extend like that...no reason to get a silly ticket!
Or, try a bigger vehicle. It sounds like a small car is not quite what you need...Then again, I haul a 73lb 13.5' tandem kayak on my Dodge Neon with a Yakima rack system...without worries, as far as 100 miles one way :)

+1. I get 4 on the roof of my Focus hatchback this way.

As seen here (http://www.pezcyclingnews.com/?pg=fullstory&id=4803), pro team car racks are custom jobs. But as others have mentioned, there should be no problem going 4 bikes wide with a conventional set-up. The size of the car hardly enters into it.
