Would I damage BB shell threads if I used a threadless bottom bracket in there?
One candidate is chromoly the other aluminum?

My recumbent came new with a threadless bottom bracket, don't ask me why, it had a threaded shell. I replaced it after a couple of years with a thread in cartridge. There was no apparent damage to the threads.

If your threads are OK, you will get a better quality BB for your money by buying a threaded cartridge. Unless you spend a LOT of money, the threadless ones are mediocre quality...

+1. Most of them aren't good enough to be called even mediocre.

I've got an old late 80's Canondale touring bike that recently stripped out the BB shell threading. I was planning on picking up a threadless BB from Velo Orange. But are there any better ones that you folks can suggest?

Never used one but VO is a great company who will stand behind their products. I have used YST and they work, but they do not last terribly long, and I even had a new one come straight from the box with play in the bearings and no adjustment potential to fix it. But for $12 or whatever they cost (definitely under $20) you could replace it every couple of years if you had to. They are better than throwing a frame away!

You will be replacing the YST every few weeks if you actually ride your bike. Not years. A $60 b.b that seems to put more emphasis on aesthetics than on function, yeah I wouldn't be surprised if it sucked. It's quite hard to make a bottom bracket that sucks more than the YST, that being said.
