I finally tested a tandem after so many years. It was a simple Dyno/GT Crestline that I borrowed from friends and my wife loved it so now we are looking for a starter. Looking at a Burley Zydeco and a KHS Comp. She likes to ride more upright so her neck doesn't have to bend much. Most of the tandems I have see on the web seem to offer a bent-down position.

1. Are those two tandems reasonable ones ($500 - $700) as starters for beach cruisers and coastal riding?

2. Where could I find stoker stems that would raise her position?
Any suggestions are appreciated.

3. Any leads on used tandems?

If you are just casual riders --as opposed to long distance riders-- either bike would probably be fine. I'm a little familiar with Burley and think they make a pretty good product. One of my other bikes is a KHS (not a tandem) and is well made. These bikes won't be as light as a SANTANA but then they are a third of the cost. Be sure the bike fits you both. Any bike shop should be able to set it up so the stoker is comfortable.

Finding used is a matter of hunting in newspapers, bulletin boards, yard sales etc. And word of mouth. Let it be known that you are looking.

Welcome to the forums. You'll find some more tandem riders here as well as just everyday riders. Alot of good people who will be more than willing to give advise and encouragement.

Huntington Beach, isn't that just south of Long Beach?

Thanks for the reply. YES Huntington Beach is about 15 miles south of Long Beach. My 18 yr old road bike is a KHS Touring and it has been very dependable. It has taken me to San Diego 3 times and to Laguna and Newport several times. I hope their tandems are as good a quality.

www.tandemmag.com/classified has used stuff from all over.

But anything under $1500 is somebody selling you his problems. good tandems cost money.
