Road bike or mountain?

In my opinion, a road pump should be long and skinny. Skinny pumps allow you to pump your tire up past 100psi, and a longer pump takes many fewer strokes to get it up to pressure. I've got Zefal HPX's on a couple of my bikes.

Mountain bikes require less pressure but more volume so I prefer to use a fatter pump like a Blackburn mammoth. I don't think that guys my age should use mini's because they take too many strokes and we might not have enough life span left to inflate a tire while using one.

If you're lazy, like me, you might like using co2. It has its limitations, but you can get a road bike tire up to pressure in just a couple of seconds. I like that feature.

Blackburn FP-1 in the appropriate length (S,M,L) has proven to be a good pump for our needs. Nice neutral brushed aluminum barrel with black and gray plastic handle and valve assemblies. Same type of valve clamp as Zefal HP-X, but it incorporates a fold-out T-handle which makes pumping up the tire a bit easier, particularly if you run high-pressure tires.

The Zefal is also a good product that's been on the market for a long time. Only nits with it are that the piston shafts always seemed more prone to rust than the Blackburn.

For the uber-gadget, there is the Topeak Road Morph. Our builder - Glenn Erickson - is fond of this model as it has a built-in pressure gauge, a flip-out foot, and the flip-out T-handle... kinda of a miniature floor pump, if you will. I've got one and found it both awkward to use and ungainly to look at hanging on a bicycle. It's held in reserve as a back-up floor pump when we travel but that's about it.

FWIW, I believe this is the pump that Co-Motion supplies if you purchase the painted to match pump option.

Of course, Co-Mo charges twice as much :rolleyes:

Howdy from Tucson!
We opt for the Topeak Mt. Morph; acts like a floor pump and with 100 strokes you get in 100 lbs. Light, easier to use than regular pumps. Might look a bit hokey on the bike, but it is almost a pleasure to have a flat!
In our years of riding have used all kinds of good pumps: Zefal, Silca, Blackburn and even a pump called the No.1 Pump (remember those?) that exploded on us while pumping up a tire! And CO2 is also a good way to go.
As for the x-tra price on a Co-Mo pump . . . remember, it is painted to match your bike; small objects like that are tough to paint properly!
