Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Buying a BD Bike Today! Help me choose?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Alright, I'm buying either the Dawes SST AL (http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/dawes/sst_al_carb_x.htm) or the Windsor The Hour (http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/windsor/thehour.htm) today. I'll be using the bike mainly as a recreational around town bike, but I'll also be doing some longer fitness rides on it as well. It won't be a commuter or racing bike. Whichever one I choose I'm going to also buy a new saddle, and either flat bars or low risers.

Alright BFSSFG, what do you think?

Like I've posted before: Nothing like waiting until the last minute to ask for help.

I think you should know what you're actually looking for before making the purchase. Those two bikes are totally different.

Dawes SST AL

much better bike, esp for fitness riding because of carbon fork and hooded brake levers

I have to say I fully agree with the statement above.

If you want to use it as a fitness bike don't be so quick to ditch the drops. The drops with brake hoods give you so many more choices on where to put your hands and are IMO much more comfortable than flats/risers. Check out the SST AL thread a little further down this page, I've written a good bit about mine.
If you're absolutely determined to flat bar you might as well get a model that comes with a front brake. The Hour comes with a rear and it is not factory installed I believe.
Front brake is significantly more important than rear. If you're not going to use a brake... well, good luck.
