So I've got this machined black Weinmann LP18 on my Trek T1 at the moment, and it used to be on a KHS Flite on which I ran a brake. I noticed that there was no squeaking, and the black colour didn't seem to come off.

Are these rims then machined for brake use but the natural finish of the rim is in fact black?

I'm curious because I feel like ordering these:

But would probably be running a brake on them. I just don't want the black finish to rub off with a deafening screech each time!

Also how do the CXP 22 compare to other low-profile rims in terms of weight and strength? To compare, I could get a non-machined set of Alex DA22s from my LBS, but it would be far more pricey. I'm just tired of using deep, heavy rims. It's time to make my track bike more functional.

Cheers!

CXP22 is heavy, but strong.

if you're going to run brakes, you might as well get machined brake surfaces since rubber has poor grip on paint.

True say. I was just hoping to keep an all-black wheelset. Would the colour at least remain? Those CXP22s I linked are apparently machined, but their braking surface is pure black.

CXP22 don't have black braking surfaces... the only black part on the brake track is the wear indicator.

the only blackish brake surfaces that last long, or never wear out, from what I hear, are ceramic coated rims with chromium green brake pads.

Black Anodized braking surfaces last a long time. But I found with mine, ride in the rain and use it, and the performance is crap. Rain and braking seems to strip the anodize off though.

Anodized to not screech also. But painted does! Anodized also makes if look like the metal is actually black.
