I would like to take a touring class that is in Oregan. I live in Michigan and I would like any suggestions as to the best and least expensive method for transporting my touring bike to the class.

A couple of suggestions:

1. Call every airline that flies there and ask them for their rates. The U.S. airlines vary widely in their rates. I think Frontier is very reasonable and United is expensive.

2. Call Greyhound and the train and ask them for their rates. This would involve sending the bike on ahead, but it could work.

Southwest air and Frontier are the cheapest to fly with the bike. You'll have to box it up, but you can get a cardboard box from a bike shop, or maybe borrow or rent a case.
You can also UPS or FedEx it. This might be cheaper if you have a bike shop box & send it than if you do it yourself. Also requires a box.
Greyhound... nope, I wouldn't do that, not matter how cheap it was. I rode the dog half way across the country with my bike once - never again.

I was thinking of sending the bike on the dog, flying, then meeting the bike in the destination city.

Amtrak Express Shipping (http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?c=Page&pagename=am%2FLayout&cid=1241267371736)? It's pretty darn cheap to bring a bike with you if you're a passenger on an Amtrak train. Dunno what their freight service costs, but I'd check into it...
