Introductions - NYC/NJ fella

Hey my name is Mete, I just picked up a Nishiki Continental, says 4130 Chrome-Moly Main Tube.

Just started getting into bicycles as another money draining hobby :notamused:

The chain is a bit rusted up and the tires are dry rotted and flat.

The bike has some rust on it and definitely needs some TLC; I will post some pictures tonight.


Would you ladies and gents' recommend I repaint the bicycle or keep the original paint? I just don't want the surface rust to spread all over the bike.

Any tire recommendations? Chain recommendations?

I would just clean it up.
Add new tires and tubes.
See how it rides.
Then determine if anything major needs replaced.

My first road bike was an 83 Nishiki Sport. Rode it 1500 miles.

i think i might need a chain. i brought the bike to work but can't look at it, i'll take a look at it tonight and dissect it a bit.

Any recommendations on reviving this bike? I've never taken apart a speed bike but I do have experience with mechanics in general.

If anyone can give me some tips on how to take off and put back the chain and the brake lines I would much appreciate it.

i stripped the bike and started the painting process. i sanded the crap out of it, primered and now i'm just putting on some coats of fluorescent orange.

the wheels are going to be white.

i need to get new brake lines, a new chain, probably a new sprocket.


how do you take off the pedal assembly? idk how :(

and the fork as well. i was able to kind of get the fork apart where i saw the bearings but that was it.

You need bike specific tools. Where in NJ are you? I'm willing to give a hand, but I'm a bit west of Manhattan.

I actually work in Manhattan and I'm on shift now.

I could meet up with you or something. I just want some hands-on experience with these types of bikes. This bike really peaked my interest in road bikes.

Decided to change the color today. I finished the paint job today too so that was a relief and I went to Joyful cycle shop in Edison today and bought some goodies and had the rear aluminum wheel True'd.

Thanks to Patrick (JunkYardBike), we were able to do a complete overhaul, 90% him of course, i was just learning.

Bike rides fabulous....for the type of bike it is.

I love it, I learned TONS and TONS today and can't wait to build some more bikes in the future!
