Continental Ultra Sport are a pretty good deal on the cheap if you plan not to skid unless necessary and willing to deal with a few flats now and then.... plus the rolling resistance is very good considering the price you pay.

$30/ea? that's pretty cheap already.

I would hit up your local department store and look at their bike section. Usually they have something dirt cheap.

go to the LBS. I ran a flat and happened to be cross from a bike store, 10 dollars and i got some duro tubes and duro tires. EZ got home replaced it

The new Conti Ultra Sport Kevlar 700:23 runs $21.00 here... it rolls out fast, have had no flatting issues over quite a few km and fields of broken glass, and they have a really decent ride quality.

If you don't skid the Vittoria Zaffiro is great; low rolling resistance, good grip. If you do skid, the Serfas Seca would be pretty good.

At any rate, you're most likely going to get killed by shipping charges to Australia no matter what tire you buy from somewhere in the US. 60 bucks for two tires from your LBS isn't that bad (depending on what tires we're talking about).

It depends on how much you ride. If you put on a decent amount of miles every week, then more expensive and oftentimes better quality tires are a sound investment.

"You get what you pay for" is really true for tires. Cheap tires don't last as long, are not as reliable, and/or don't roll worth a damn. When it comes to tires, you need to think of cost per mile rather than cost up front. Cheap tires may end up costing you more in the long-run.

Around here, it's the aforementioned Vittoria Zaffiro currently $14, Michelin dynamic (were $13 a couple years ago when I got a 3-pack, but they recently shot up to $20), Innova Skyline $13.

Never tried the Skylines, but the Zaffiros are a hair better than the Dynamics in the grip department. My best score of late was Panaracer Stradius sport 26mm for $10 at a swap meet - much grippier than the Zaffiros.

About 5 years ago I got some IRC Red Storm on sale for $10 apiece, currently they're around $16. They're about on par with the Zaffiro.

That's not too far off. But they also have to deal with import tariffs, duties, and lots of regulatory BS.
