Will a 105 rear deraillure work with an 11-34 cassette? These are both 9 speed Shimano.

I don't think so. The 105 RD long cage has a 27t max, but I bet you could squeeze a 11-28 on there. Do you have a double or triple front?

Triple. Origionally 52/42/30, but the outer and middle are being swapped for 48 and 39. Guess I'll sell the 105 and pick up an LX.

Try this over in the mechanics forum - they may know something I don't. If you have a triple, 11-28 should suffice. Have you played with Sheldon's gear inch calculator (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gears/)?

No, although I'm familar with the site. I must confess I don't understand the concept behind gear inches. I should do a search on that to get a better understanding of that. OTOH, I may be able to find an expplanition in my Zinn repair guide.
