My LBS claims that a Shimano chain (I don't remember the exact model...) is a better replacement instead of a Campy C9 chain like the one that actually came stock with my Veloce 9 speed (triple) groupo. The LBS says it will run and shift smoother. I usually trust them and they sell Shimano and Campy stuff... Any toughts about that? :D

Four years ago, I heard a few horror stories about Shimano chain failures, but this may have been a temporary condition. As I have mentioned before, I buy only SRAM chains now.

Do I understand it correctly that you can use 'any' 9-speed chain on 'any' 9-speed drivetrain? Shimano/SRAM/etc. chain on campy chainring/cassette and vice versa? Does the same apply to 10-speed configurations?

Yes. Shimano, Campy, SRAM and Wipperman are all compatible with each other as long as the number of cogs is correct for the chain model.

Thank you everyone for your thoughtful comments and wise guidance on that specific issue. I would prefer to stick to a 100% Campy drivetrain but I will try a Shimano chain and hope it keeps its promises... ;)
