It's so awesome looking at the finish line while Phil and Paul babble. This is the kind of coverage that's going to put the TOC over the top.

Did you guys see the golf cart drive under the start/finish banner?

Freaking epic.

Tsuru - thanks. I ran out if steam on these.

Very disappointing coverage today. Are the motorbikes grounded too?

Jeez...There was a downpour for a huge portion of today's stage at the Giro and there was no problem with the coverage. Some rain here in Cali and we get reruns from yesterday.

If you don't want to know what happened in stage 2 of the ATOC, then you don't open up a thread titled "ATOC stage 2"

+1. The team sponsors must be so pleased to send their guys halfway around the world for 15 seconds of exposure.

How come we can see the Giro (and other races) in the rain but on TOC? They knew rain was coming today and even mentioned it on the first broadcast....so why no contingency plan?

Sorry...but this seems very, very lame.

Funny thing is that it was supposed to be better weather in May. The races in Europe have plenty of bad weather. There was downpour for a good chunk of the Giro today and we got to see all of it. I really don't understand it either, Smoore.

Dude, they ran a rerun of most of yesterday's stage. Then only had one camera from behind the finish line as the race ended. Got all of about 45 seconds of racing as they finished.

as I said in the other thread, the FAA grounded the helicopters and fixed wing aircraft because of a low ceiling and icing. The motorcycles beam their video/audio signals up to the aircraft which then sends it on to the production truck at the finish. No aircraft no video from the course.

I saw them race past my place - was going to go to the stage start only to catch them coming up on the stage start just as they finished the downtown loop. It was pretty exciting to wait - several car loads of cops and VIPs led the way for the team support vehicles and then the pack - and they rushed by so quickly I couldn't pick out or even cheer for anyone. The real fun began with the buildup of bicycles at the intersection rushing through the first green light like water through a broken dam. I managed to avoid this through some clever maneuvering, but it was nonetheless exciting to watch. :D

It was quite uneventful, save for the fact that the only team that gave a damn and waved at the fans was the team running Colnagos with the green support BMW. Everybody else drove by without waving. Of course, I was gawking at the machinery, so I might have missed something.

I have a question, though. I saw the SRAM neutral support vehicle with some Specialized bikes on it and a bike with some wheels on them. Do these guys help the non-SRAM/Specialized guys when they need it? I realize that the big names probably don't need it, so who exactly are they for?

^^ neutral support is for everyone.

edit: just realized I may have no idea what I'm talking about. Feel free to correct me

you are correct kudude. neutral is for everyone. for example say a rider is on a breakaway and has a serious mechanical and needs a bike swap, the SRAM person grabs the neutral bike from the rack and gets the rider back underway as quickly as possible. When the team car catches back up they can swap to a team bike if they wish.

And gray, you saw TeamType1. They have the lime green kit and livery on their BMW and ride Colnagos.

I'm bummed about the coverage... and yes, Trek760 is correct, no flights = no video. Booo!!

Here are a couple shots from the start. It's pretty awesome walking amongst these fellas....
