Great Lakes - 5/29 - The 3rd Annual BFNIC Double or Nothing - The Official Thread

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Jackrabbit Slim's and Big Kahuna Burger, in association with You'd Dig It The Most Productions are proud to present:

The Third Annual BFNIC Double or Nothing Metric

When: Saturday May 29th 8:00 am meet up, 8:30 roll out.
Where: Uphill Grind Coffee/Bikes (http://www.uphillgrind.net) in Cross Plains, WI. Map to start (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=1827+Bourbon+Rd,+Cross+Plains,+WI+53528,+USA&ie=UTF8&t=p&ll=43.115332,-89.636335&spn=0.03045,0.064459&z=14&iwloc=addr) (park in back of building!).
What: 63 or so miles of very hilly roads in HHH territory
Why: Because they are there

The tentative route. MapMyRide version (http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/wi/cross-plains/366900797083) (subject to change slightly, but not by much)
The tentative route. Printable map version. (http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc205/cylowe97/2008%20Cross%20Plains%20Ride/cl97DoubleNothingMap.jpg)
Cue Sheet (http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc205/cylowe97/2008%20Cross%20Plains%20Ride/CLRideCueSheet.jpg).

The route is loosely based on the 100k Horribly Hilly Hundreds, with some variations here and there.
Climbs up Sutcliffe, Pinnacle, Lake View, Mounds Park Rd, Garfoot, Braun, and Observatory are good for the soul.
Optional challenge up Mounds Road to the top of Blue Mound midway through the ride.
Optional challenge up Barlow Road near the end of the route.
This is an arsekicker of a route. If you’re training for the HHH or DLD or other challenge ride, this is one for you.

Unlike other BFNIC rides, this one will NOT loop back to the start to refuel during the route. Plan for one rest stop / regroup in Blue Mounds at the General Store at the base of Mounds Road.

Note on speeds A groups/B Groups/Whatever: With the natural variation in climbing speeds among those who may attend, this ride will be much less social and more personally challenging. We will have contact information in case anyone is lost or broken down, but at this point we will NOT have anyone officially riding as a sweep on this ride and cell phone coverage can be sketchy out in the valleys. Following the route on rural roads and personal safety is ultimately up to the individual rider.

Note on supplies: Riders should be able to supply themselves for 30+ very hilly miles without a chance of refueling along the route until Blue Mounds.

The route follows the same as the 2008/2009 versions. We’re leaving it as is. Any route changes will be added here to the first post.

Hope to see you there!

We'll be here bright and early, and I'll have the place open at 7:45a.

Thinking about offering Team UGLY jerseys for $55 and bibs for $65. This would be for in stock only as I am fazing out these designs.

This does not count. You need to feel this ride, not be enslavened to the acronyms of your computer.

This is NOT a training ride. It's one to enjoy the roads and ignore the electronic shackles.

While I appreciate and will join in with the "get in touch with yourself/nature" aspect of this ride, I am also going to record it for my training log. It's important to me. And no, I don't plan on sharing the numbers. Too many people on this forum seem to get upset by them so if you haven't noticed, I almost never post them anymore. ;)

Hey, it's been a while since we've seen you out and about.

Yeah, it's an early morning for those of us down Chicago way. Just as point of reference because you'll obviously take a different route, but Cross Plains is about a 2 hour drive from Elgin, but that's all interstate to and around the Madison beltline. The last kick on US-14 to Cross Plains is quick.

Yeah it has been a while. I haven't done any serious riding in the last few months besides commuting and rides to the donut shop. I've still got my HHH maps and a reasonably good sense of direction so I'm not worried about being dropped and lost. I'm looking forward to seeing the group again.

I would actually think he should ride with the Polar, just because the data would be very useful in planning proper rest and future workouts.

Since we know he doesn't do rest weeks and recovery rides, though, I'm with you.

If a tree falls in the forest, but it's not using its SRM*, how do we know the tree even fell, let alone measure the impact it created when it either did or did not fall?

Hmmmmm...not sure what SRM is so I looked it up in Urban Dictionary First Definition: SRM Solid-propellant Rocket Motor Yeah, I'll take one of those for Saturday. ;) Another Definition: SRM Solid Rock Ministries Maybe we can get them to pray for us.

I'm just thinking I don't even need no freakin compact anymore...to heck with the sand bagging.. haha NVR you won't get dropped. There will be a couple of groups. Will be great to see you! I'm just hoping to see CC in the parking lot before we roll out; I'll have my black electrical tape in case we need to make any modifications on his machine

A few days ago I swapped out my Psimet wheels with a colleague for him to try and as a result I had no wheel sensor. We went about 25 miles or so (I know the route to be that) but it was quite liberating to be freed of the computer. As it is it only does the basics (av speed, distance, od, time, pace), but it reminded me of the halcyon helmetless, lycra-less summers of youth spent riding around with no sense of speed or distance.

Have fun guys. I'll be doing a decidedly less rigorous ride on the Ozaukee Interurban Trail that day. Would have been nice to really test the compact, but I'll get plenty of opportunities.

Maybe I can talk you guys into doing the Wright Stuff Century in September.
