Road Cycling - how do you report a bike seller on eBay for asking way too much?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

$11,000 for an '03 Trek 5900 from somebody with no feedback of any kind and a poor grasp of english.
also, there's no way that's a 65cm. =)

If you look at the bids list...it seems to jump from 1200 to 10,000..So i think something fishy is up. I dont think the ebay buyer should beware, I think that the seller should beware..I dunno

seller only 'asked' $499.00 (starting bid) ... someone's gonna overpay considerably for this bike.....

Just your standard Ebay scammer. Someone bid high to get it out of the price range a real bidder might fall for. All of the specs are wrong. Listed as 65cm?? DA 7800?? Specs listed are for the Modone. Pic is of a '02 5900.

There seem to be eBay 'vigilantes' that browse for scam type listings. They bid the items out of range of any reasonable buyer (and, of course, don't pay the scammer).

You're right. Tons of stuff is wrong
It's not the Madone SL prototype frame
2003 model year? Looks more like the 2001 paint scheme.
Bontrager wheels? Look like Rolfs to me.
110mm stem? Looks more like 130mm.

wacky thing is, after someone bid it up to $9999.99 from $1500.00, seemingly eliminating anyone sane from bidding, two higher bids were made!!!
what is "buyer beware" and how do you use it?
isn't there some simpler way to [report] like here on the forums?
i mean i know it'd take a lot of ppl power, but whatever - eBays is all grows up now after all.
i have to say i like the idea of vigelante bidding, but i wouldn't want to use my underdevloped profile for that. i'd rather have a second profile if that's possible to go scammer hunting.

Just so you know, you may never get any type of feedback from Ebay after filing this report. I ran across one of these scams where a '03 Hyabusa motorcycle was involved, Florida title, seller's residence per Ebay account (hi-jacked account that is) in Ohio, and he was in Greece. Just send a Western Union money order to him and he'd take care of getting the bike shipped by FeDex. Yeah, right. Anyway, after submitting the report the ad disappeared in about 30 minutes. Never heard back from Ebay.
Help / Related Links - Security Center / General Marketplace Security - Report a Problem.....
At Contact Us menu: make the following series of menu selections...
"Report Problems With Other Ebay Members"
"Fraud Concern for Buyers"
"Report a Link you Think is Fraudulent (You Didn't Bid)"
Hit Continue... (This is where it gets confusing)
at Customer Support Options click on Email
If you're not signed in, Ebay will prompt you do so.
Finally, you'll get to the Email message screen which looks like this:

The seller has not ask for this price. there are 8 bids which one of them (I believe it is either BS or an error) brought up the Price from $1500 to $9,999...
the seller is a first time seller, and he says the frame is 65cm.. this is not a 67cm frame.. I think the whole thing is fishy..
yeah, i didn't realize it wasn't the starting bid - i think HalfBiked is right that a "vigelante" came and saved us from this guy.
thx to livnGood for the tutorial though - eBay's site nav is a bit awkward sometimes.
If you notice the seller is not a registered user, this happens all the time with sellers like this. You can bid as high as you want and never have to worry about paying since the seller is not registered and nothing can come of it. These auctions are jokes so don't worry, no one will actually pay for that bike.

Oh! now I get it... someone wanted to see what is the high bid, and just put in a huge number (like 9,999) and flushed out the highest proxy bidding and then retracted thier bids.. very dirty trick..

They did not retract. The seller cancelled the bids. The saga continues. If this is not a scam, the seller is a complete nooby and has no idea what the bike is. But I still would put my money on a scam.
he wrote me offlist saying it was 56cm and that he wanted $1500.
both of those sound reasonable actually - but it's not relevant to me.
sounds like his english is not all that great either.

The seller are hoping you e-mail him about the bike and buy the bike directly from him for $whatever you will pay without the "protection" of ebay. He will sell a non-existing bike for $1400 that is worth $4400 through e-mail only, not via ebay. You will never see the bike or your money again. He probably has 10 different ebay id's to bid up prices and keep selling if he needs to. You cant buy it through ebay because then you may have some recourse.
In the words of Daniel Carver, "Wake up white people!" Are there this many stupid people in the world?
