Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I use a section of water suppy hose (availiable at any hardware store cheap) and some Zip ties.

I also use an old road tire with the beads cut off for my commuter.

I don't like the "mummy" look. The tire looks cleaner.

I use the paint on my frame. It's a mountain bike, it'll get scratched.

Its not a scratch issue...its a noise. For me anyways. Scratchs don't bug me in the least.

Why dont you guys buy those chainstay protectors? Are they not worth the price, or do they not work?

Why dont you guys buy those chainstay protectors? Are they not worth the price, or do they not work?$8 bucks for one of those when with a little brain power I can have something that does the same job cheaper or free? I think I'll think with my brain instead of my wallet.

I dont think its that much of a deal, having chain slap. But anything you can put around it that will fit in nicley. I would use a tube, but you can actually buy cheap protectors from bike shops.

i've got a lizardskinz chainstay protector on my bike... it helps with the paint chips and stuff, although it doesn't really do much for the noise.

I turned to single speeds. No more chain slap.

I don't use chainstay protection during the summer, but I usually put one on when it becomes fall.

A good way is to use a leather baseball bat grip that you can buy cheap at a sports store. It stops chips and scratches but also stops the noise.

Duct tape for now.

The specialized chainstay is sexy, and makes a satisfying *ding* on big drops

Duct tape works suprisingly well.

Chain slap is when the chain hits the chain stay and makes a ding noise. It also chips the paint. Fall is another word for Autumn.

Since I use a road cassette on my MTB (12-25) I can get away with fixing my rear der. - basically, you replace the spring that connects the der. to the hanger, replace it with a washer, and the der. no longer moves in relation to the hanger. Ends chainslap, but you can't do it if you've got a cassette with a big range (normal MTB cassettes)

I use electrical tape. Cheap and effective.
