I bought a headset for my 1977-1980 Nishiki. After reading a little more I realize that maybe i should have bought a JIS instead of ISO one...
Is there any place I can find this information? I don't have a tool to accurately measure diameters myself...

without knowing that model, you probably got the right one. however, my miyata 1000 has an ISO headset with a 27.0 crown race. if the crown race is the wrong size, you can probably just reuse your current one.

After hard experience, I learned that the only sure thing to do is to take the headset off and measure it. This is a pain, but what is even more painful is having everyone assure you that your bike is iso, then spend an afternoon cursing trying to install iso cups into what turns out to be a jis sized headtube.
If you must go this route, at least try to install the crown race first, it will be immediately obvious that this isn't going to work.

Not sure if this will help or not. My 1980 Azuki, which is a close cousin to Nishiki and shares the same serial # format, definitely has a JIS headset. Last year, when I rebuilt it, I was able to find a JIS headset in black at Loose Screws.

JIS headsets are actually quite easy to find on ebay, etc.
