Foo - Anybody have any strange arrangements with their neighbors?

Seems like everyplace I live, I always have nontraditional arrangements with my neighbors. Our neighbor's Great Dane has probably spent more time in our house than his own over the past 7 years -- many people think he's ours and we keep a separate leash, bowl, and treats for him. We have a hole in the fence so he can come anytime he wants, and he has learned how to open our sliding glass door. Another neighbor weeds my front berm free of charge and even has planted things there.

At the last place I lived, I mowed the lawn of a perfectly able bodied neighbor who was just about my same age as me free of charge just because I felt like it.

Anyone else do strange things for their neighbors or vice versa?

Both neighbors on either side have put up a rod iron fence around their front yards. When I mow the front lawn, my lawn mower would get too close their nice fence and scratch up the paint. Now when either neighbor cuts the lawn, they go into my yard with their weed-eaters and cut the side of my lawn too and that's fine by me. I then know it's time for me to cut the grass so it'll look even.
When I first moved into my house, my neighbor and their guests would always park in my driveway. I'd wake up a night and find 1 or 2 cars parked into my driveway! I approached my neighbor nicely about it and he stopped and eventually told his guests also. Apparently my house was vacant for awhile before I bought it so it was a habit with them. Every now and then they have bar-b-ques and would ask if they could use my spacious driveway so their guests don't have to park in the street. If I don't have to go anywhere that evening, I'll shamelessy demand a heaping plate of bar-b-que or some beer in exchange for the use of my driveway and both of us are happy!

We get along well with all of our neighbors. However we tend to invite this one couple over for beers in the summer, or vice versa, more than our other neighbors. So when we built our good-neighbor fence a few years ago, both of us decided to incorporate a beer pass-thru window in the fence. It was sized appropriately to pass a 24 pack thru. We've never actually used it to pass beer thru, but we do use it often to chat with our neighbors.

With all of our neighbors, we each tend to do others favours (snow blowing, looking after yards and homes when they're away for a few days, loaning / borrowing tools, etc). We live in a great neighborhood.

Funny that you mention that. We also often have visiting dogs so the yard is extremely well fertilized no matter how well I try to keep on top of things. My yard contains the lushest, fastest growing grass in the neighborhood.

I barely know our neighbours, except for that they have a dog and two cats. I live in a duplex. I blame the ****ty car-centric design of our cul-de-sac, where everyone parks their car and immediately goes into their house.

I snowblow the sidewalk in front of four houses on our block just because I have an over-powered snowblower and nothing else to blow in the winter.

We are moving this week, though, so I get to learn about new neighbors in a few days...

Our current neighborhood is very unfriendly. We don't even know anyone. Growing up as a kid, I remember that every day, every parent on the block would hang out in our backyard while every child played together--every day after school/work and all day during the summer. I grew up thinking that every 'hood was like that, but I have learned that it isn't. :-|

We rented a house once that was on a main road. A stone loop connected our driveway and our next door neighbor's, so we were always looking at them turning around through our front window. I kind of hated that.

Same house - the landlord was lazy but not unreasonable. There were certain repairs/maintenance that he said he would do, then it never got done. So I did some of the work, calculated time at an hourly rate and materials, and billed him when I paid the rent, deducting the amount from the rent check. he was okay with that; in fact he said that as long as there was enough detail that he could write off the expenses on his taxes, he was happy. So I did several repairs in exchange for lowered rent payments. When we moved out he said we were the best renters we'd ever had.

Tying the neighbor and landlord thing together, before that rental, we rented half a duplex; the landlady lived in the other half. She was elderly and, um.... well, a lush. So we helped take care of her at times. One time she passed out while a pork chop was cooking in her toaster oven, setting off her smoke alarm. I went back and there she was trying to set up a ladder to shut off the alarm, while smoke was still pouring out of the toaster oven. I shut off the oven, then took care of the alarm. I also did several pretty trivial repairs on the house and also on her car (like changing out a headlight). We got a Christmas card from her every year until she passed away, over 20 years after we left. Her daughter sent a letter letting us know her mom had passed, and said that we were her mom's favorite rentors and the only ones she kept in touch with after we moved out.

When we owned a home in Dearborn, MI, I was "adopted" by my neighbor so that we could get the employee discount on a Ford car. He was also great because he had EVERY tool ever made, and freely offered to loan them if I ever needed anything. The neighbor on the other side was an older Italian lady who didn't speaka de English pretty good, but was like an extra grandmother to our boys, baby sitting them several times and refusing to accept money. We took care of her (picking up stuff at the store and stuff) as best we could.

My neighbors and I just ignore each other most of the time, except for my right diagonal neighbor, whose daughter is a HS friend of my sister. Kinda sad, but meh.

My bosses are my neighbors a couple of streets over, and it's kinda weird to see them hanging around the park and crap, but at least I can get rides home from them after work. A lot of the customers at my store are neighbors too, and we share a friendly hello if we see each other on the street.

The GF'ss got a big honking snowblower and a next door neighbor who can't clean his sidewalk. They're on the route to school for a bunch of kids, so one of usually does his walk for him when it snows. I guess that's not strange when you consider what being neighbors should mean, but it's not as common as it should be these days.

I try to be polite and speak tortured Dutch to my neighbours.

Our upstairs neighbors and us have a cat sitting agreement. When one of us is out of town, we watch each other's cats. I've even brought her cat into our apartment when it wasn't feeling good. I was amazed at how well our cat dealt with having this strange sick cat in our apartment.

Our upstairs neighbours (we're in an apartment complex) have a key to our place. They help my fiancee take care of our dog on weekends when I'm out doing all-day bike rides. We all like to cook and bake, so there's lots of trading of food.

Strangest thing: I was cleaning out some drawers in the kitchen and found a bunch of "Mr. Potato Head" -ish decorations... Eyes, ears, mouth, etc. from a pumpkin decorating kit. We now trade food with the face parts stuck on it. It started with a pineapple I decorated, left on their doormat, then knocked on their door and ran downstairs. The face showed up on a plate of cupcakes a few days later at my doorstep. So I stuck the parts on a mini-watermelon. They came back on an eggplant. This is our running joke, and we've been using pictures of the food face creations as our FB profile pix.

I do odd jobs for neighbors all the time. I usually edge the grass for one or two neighbors, since one only has an electric string trimmer and the other has no edger at all, and I have a nice 4 wheeled gas powered edger with a curb wheel, so I can edge a lawn FAST.

We all look out for each other in our hood.

All of our friendly neighbors moved away. One got pregnant and moved in with the baby daddy in SC, the other is getting married and they bought a house together. The guy next door is a lazy ass who never cuts his grass or takes care of anything. The lady across the street is apparently running for the title, as they never cut their grass either, although she is rarely home. We keep an eye on her daughter from time to time, and feed her when the mom doesn't get home till too late.
I have only had a real problem with one of the neighbors who is a mean, drunk bastard that likes to yell at my kid. I make it a point not to pay attention to him anymore, since I had to go down and talk to him once about it, and he tried to instigate a fight in his front yard with wife, baby, and young son watching. I know the next time I have to deal with him will involve and ass whipping and me going to jail, so I just avoid him.

One "neighbor" actually lives a state away, but has 100 acres across the street. We mind his place, mow his lawn, etc., and he shoots our deer.

Another neighbor who lives up the hill has goats, horses & a passle of dogs. We do the neighbor a favor by keeping our dogs contained so they don't run up the hill & kill the goats (my GSDs just DON'T LIKE goats!), and we sell our hay to them instead of the other goat-people.

The old-men neighbors? we take them to the hospital when they call.

Another neighbor - whose house burned down and is currenty living in a camper trailer until they re-build - comes by with the kids for clean-ups requiring more than their camper's 6 gallon hot water tank can handle - and stays for dinner.

Another neighbor calls us when the electricity goes off so we can tell him when it's back on - he has to switch off his master fuse to run his generator, and we have a generac which senses the power restoration automatically.

And.... that's life in the holler!

My neighbors on the right moved in around 8 years ago and were total strangers at the time, they are pretty cool with us and my wife has taken care of their 10 month old twinn babies since they were born. We often pass a dinner plate to each other over the backyard fence. Now the neighbors on the left of us are a bunch of dicks! We say "Hi" from time to time but we rarely talk and really could care less about each other. We basically have the "Siu Blue Wind Treaty" with them. Did I mention that they are my cousins from my moms side of the family?

While the arrangement wasn't strange, the reactions from others were.

Neighbour's new dog used to whine and bark a lot when she was out (either at work or other times). This used to drive the wife and I nuts. The owner was a walker, but not a runner. This dog needed to get a lot more exercise - it was a whippett/kelpie cross. So we introduced ourselves and offered to run the dog. Wife was doing marathon training, so it was a match made in heaven for little Jasper. He'd drag her for 10km, then she'd drag him for 10km.

The strange part happened at the local 'off the leash' park. I'd run Jasper down to the park and let him loose. He was a cute dog and very pleasant, so people would say 'hi' and ask me about him. People thought it was strange that I didn't know how old my dog was etc, then I had to admit that Jasper was the neighbour's and that we borrowed him to go running!

Great Neighbors.
South = Jim. Good old guy has breathing and allergy problems. I mow his grass when needed, because it creates breathing problems for him. Taught me a lot about gardening years ago.
North = John and Lois. Great folks. He's a tree surgeon and drag racer and makes a lot of noise. I don't call the cops, and he routs out my old stumps, trims my trees and plows my drive way. We talk almost every day. I keep his computer running and we keep an eye on each others places.
West = Forget their names. Family with kids. Nice kids who love my dogs.
East (across the street) = Dorothy. Wonderful elderly lady. She helps us, we help her.

I have a neighbor who goes fishing when the salmon are running in, he smokes a lot of the wild salmon he catches. We have an agreement that he gives me some. I can my own tuna, so I give him my home canned tuna. He also has a house not far from Telluride, Colorado, I get to use that too, sweet place! I need to do more things for them, they are too nice.

Good neighbors both sides and across the street. Two neighbors over the back fence, one nice older lady, one couple where the guy is dumber than a bucket of rocks, and the woman is Satans sister. One nosy Nelly down the street who is always snooping around the other neighbors yards and giving unwanted advice. Doesn't bother me any more, since I threatened him with his life if I ever saw him on my property again. I'm actually just a gentle ***** cat, but it's a lot of fun making him think I'm a homicidal maniac.

I keep a close watch on my neighbors across the border.

I know I already replied, but when I lived in Ohio, we would yell at the girls to the north because they would park in our reserved spot on purpose. The lady to the south would tan and hang out topless in her yard (women can be topless in Ohio, for the most part), and the people to the west were wannabee landlords even though they had no business doing what they did much of the time.

Two houses down, the people would take care of our cat when she snuck out. We didn't know this until we posted a sign to get rid of our cat, and these neighbors recognized her and said "oh, we have already been taking care of her from time to time." That was kinda weird. And they ended up permanently keeping the cat.

When I feed them - they ate the entire garden except for 1 tomato - they're MINE. and i want them dead.... or you can come & take them to your house!
