yesterday..An entirely different biking world has opned up for me, and I approach it with a bit of caution at first.

Bought a 2004 Bianchi Pista, which was 25% off the regular price at a local dealer. Too good of a deal to pass up. Also got some "Look-style" pedals.

I realize that I have to take it very slow at the very outset, so I can get accustomed to riding and, more importantly, stopping. It takes me around 3 full wheel revolutions to come to a complete stop.

I think I'll get a front brake installed, just in case of emergencies!

Ultimately, I view this as a way to help with training, improve cadence, etc. and a good, inexpensive bike to ride/commute in the city.

That is, once I get more comfortable with the concept! I think I'll take the bike to a park and just cruise at slow speeds this weekend.

What's with all the roadies/health nuts lately?

Welcome NSJ, but I'd be a lot happier to meet you if it was NJS...

And don't stop. Don't worry about stopping. Avoid.

I've read that a lot of roadies ride fixed come winter for training purposes. I imagine the fact that it is much easier to stop a fix in wet weather also comes into play.

"What's with all the roadies/health nuts lately?"

yeah, whodathunk transportation can be used as exercise equipment?

I welcome anyone; all types of riders, but I seriously hope this forum doesnt start sounding like the RBR.

"I imagine the fact that it is much easier to stop a fix in wet weather also comes into play."

just the fact that youre not competing in winter, so theres no harm in not riding your road setup. You get the training advantages of the fg, without the disadvantage of daclimatizing to the roadbike in season. nothing more to it than that.

If it helps, I'm trying to counter the roadie/healthy trend by riding in jeans and only consuming coffee and donuts.*

stevo - Forgive me, but what is the RBR? If it was RBF, I think I might know what you mean...

jinx_removing - that wouldn't surprise me. Now that I have seen the light (can I get an amen brothers?) I will never ride anything but a fixed, brakeless bike on the ice again...

I'm trying to counter the healthy trend with Jameson...

Does that count?

"but what is the RBR?"

Road Bike Review -

another site with a series of bike-related forums; one of which was Fixed Gear. The people (posts) on that site were extremely materialistic and vain (you know the kind, 50 threads in a row of 'I have $3500 burning a hole in my pocket; should I buy another Seven, or upgrade my wheelset to titanium spokes?).

I hung out for a while there trying to offer alternative solutions to problems (i.e., those that dont involve money), but found myself wasting my time becaue most there were more interested in spending money than solving the problem (or even riding).

Anywhoo, no biggie, if thats your thing; but its not mine. I ultiamtely stumbled onto this forum; which seems to offer a lot more for the 'everday' cyclists.

...at least for now....
