Ok, I saw Avatar last night and it was a cool movie and all, but I just don't get the hype.

The plot was non-existent. The characters were all characatures. It was basically "Dances with Wolves" in space.

I agree. Great visuals, but the story line was lacking.

Yeah pretty much. Honestly I only went for visual goodies.

I watched it in my flight to prague with air canada's inflight movies.
the story was basically that same old story of colonists being colonists with a mutiny of some colonists who join the natives and fight back.

I liked it, because it's totally inconsistent with reality, the characters were so extreme that they were comical and I couldn't see this ever happening. Basically, I liked the absolutely fictional part of it.

oh, and the visuals were quite good.

I watched it on a flight as well, wish it was to Prague though  Had to re-watch it at home to see if it was any better on a big screen ... it wasn't.

Only good thing about it was the 3D....

Just saw it via redbox. Thin plot or not, it was darn good eye candy. Worth $400 milliion-ish to make? I can't see the studios gambling on too many like that. Gotta have a lot of clout to warrant funding like that. I can't see an Avatar 2 having the same $uccess.

I had a couple of rye and cokes on the plane ... kind of gave it a 3D effect.

We saw it at a Imax theater, and visually it was spectacular. Yeah, the story ain't new, but every generation
has their own Dances with Wolves.

I liked it a lot.

Wait, how did I miss Avatar hitting the redbox?

I know from the glowing reviews of you BFers that it stinks, but I hear my employer gets a plug in there.

Somewhere on FailBlog, there is a pic of someone who took the plot summary for Pocahontas and changed a few names/words and put Avatar at the top. Hilarious!

Oh yeah here it is! (http://failblog.org/2010/01/10/avatar-plot-fail/)

The redbox release was delayed one month from normal rental channels.

My favorite description was "Dances with Smurfs." Very weak "been there, seen that, got the t-shirt" plot but good GCI.

So you're comparing it to a multiple Oscar winner AND you don't like it. So there's no pleasing you......

for $10 more you can get an entire season of ST: Voyager
or for the same $30 as Voyager, you can get pirates of the Caribbean and its sequels.
and the pirates of the Caribbean movies came with a coupons for a free ticket to Prince of Persia.

I couldn't quite bring myself to spending $210 for 7 seasons of ST: Voyager.

Hey, for only $1.09 the wife and I got to see it last night. Thank you, redbox! Animation was awesome, plot was meh.

I hate to say it, but the theater's 3D gimickry helped me to tolerate this movie.
The immersion I felt watching it large scale was necessary to overcome the lack of character development, predictability, clichéd themes...
I feel the same way about How to Tame Your Dragon. Equally watchable, but only on the big screen. Both movies are cutting edge art.
