Just wanted to post this, to put some information out and maybe get some feedback.
I bought a NOS 2006 Trek Super Doodlebug Trailer last year at a LBS that carried them. We specifically picked the Trek after using a Schwinn because of the leg and headroom. My oldest son(3 years) is very tall and has very long legs(average height of a 5 year old, but only weighs 40lbs). We looked at several other brands, but didn't like the fit, except for the Chariot's and they were a bit more expensive. When I bought the Trek, I was advised they were discontinuing making trailers for 2010, but that this NOS trailer would still be warrantied and parts available for many years. I only used the trailer 2 times last year because I was very much out of shape to pull the weight around and this year, I was able to get out 2 times with the kids on 10+ mile rides...so there is only around 40 miles on the trailer.
Last Sunday, the plastic piece that holds the cross bar and the rest of the trailer up cracked. So, it was under warranty and I brought it back to the LBS. The replacement part had been discontinued...for the same reason that I had, but I was told there was a replacement piece that took it's place. Part came in on Saturday and the part doesn't fit the older trailer models. So, they tell me that Trek will just replace the trailer with a 2010 brand new, fully warrantied Burley Trailer....great right?? WRONG...my son doesn't fit well in the trailer. He looks more cramped now than he did in the Schwinn Trailer. So, Trek can't get the part for me and supposedly don't have any models in stock from prior years either. Now, it is just a waiting game.
So, anyone who has an older model Trek(at least 2006 and older) with a Roll Bar cannot get this piece replaced...and the piece was discontinued because it broke all of the time. I think Trek should have recalled this entire product and at least stopped any further sales of the trailers. The piece, in my opinion, can completely break off and cause the trailer to collapse, but I was told by the LBS Trek Rep that it can't...I don't think I want to take that chance with my kids.
Anyone have a Burley Trailer and your opinions on it? I read comparison reviews of the 2 and the Trek got much higher marks than the Burley in almost every category!
My kids are so mad...an entire week without their trailer and no end in sight!
Thanks
