Joe--Sounds like a neat idea. Also a good way of documenting a tour, in addition to keeping in touch.

I'm going on a tour in July--only a week, but I'd still like to document it. Of course, keeping a journal is always a good idea, but I read somewhere that if just writing in a journal at the end of every day is a tough task to hold yourself to, one good alternative is treating it like a correspondence with someone else--either by actually mailing letters to someone every day or so, or just writing letters to be posted later.

Seems like an online travelogue would be a handy electronic form of this epistolary method of documentation. How exactly would this travelogue work? Would it be just like posting to the forums?

Thanks for the offer--I feel certain I'll take you up on it.

JuJu, check out Catfish's (http://www.bikeforums.net/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=162) travelogue on this site. He posted every few days at local libraries.

Take along a mini recorder to keep a voice record until you can transcribe it. Be sure to start each sudio snippet with date, maybe time. Works for me.

JuJu,

I was Willie Weir who said that.

His book, Spokesongs is my favorite bike book of all time.

Hi Joe-

Think I'll take you up on that offer- I just joined on the recommendation of my buddy Catfish, and I'm leaving for a month and a half of riding through Italy. It's totally spur of the moment, unplanned, and scary as hell.... but hopefully will be a ton of fun. I'd love to document my trip! Contact me whenever.

Joe.. the Bicycle the America site contains a Free links service where people can post their WEB site or WEB diary information.

see: http://www.bicycletheamericas.com/sharingtheexperience.html

If they use services like www.bravenet.com or www.diaryland.com they can also set up a mailing list to their key family and friends. Works quite well.

They could also set up a thread here and past a URL for the thread to the above site could they not?

Cheers

Gil

Gil, Welcome to the forums.

Is that your site? It looks great, good content there! Keep up the good work. I would have no problems hosing travelogues here, and having that site link directly to the members individual forum.

Gil, If you want to link to the forums from your site, feel free to use your referral link, may win some free gear for yourself! ;)

Found it.. the small print on header on top of form on that page.. missed it early when spead reading.. also tried a search for it but came up empty.

perhaps you could add a search on "referral link" and just return the value for the logged in user?

thannks

Gil

Joe I think this is a great idea. As you know I'm doing my 5 day tour in August. As far as I know I should be able to post from a library at least twice, maybe 3 times during my trip. As keep in touch with others.

Joe

I am planning on 500-600 miles of the Lewis and Clark to Iowa border - (will know the starting point in Iowa next Feb.) then hooking up for the 31st Ragbrai next summer. The following summers I plan on completing the rest of the Lewis and Clark - how do I go about posting journal entries?

Awesome Idea as it is always great reading what others are doing and it would be good to inspire more people to have a go at touring.

Hi there,
I am leaving in the morning for a two to three month tour from Prescott, Arizona to at least the border of Canada near the north shore of Lake Superior. I plan to write travelogues and would love to post them here. Thanks for your help!

I'm going cross country Maine to Seattle>San Diego this summer and I'd love to get info on how to post travelogue. Like some of the electronic ways of doing this, but no laptop.

I'm guessing there will be libraries or Internet Cafe's along the way on your route. That is probably the best option - just drop into one of those every couple of days. I wouldn't be carrying a laptop on a tour anyway, it's just one more unnecessary thing to keep track of.

I did an update every couple of days for the recent Perth to Hobart ride. I found that it was a little bit harder to find access than I thought. When riding all day long, often the cafes were closed by the time I'd had a shower and found where they were.

I wrote my own mysql/php page to allow me to put stats in each day. I then cut and pasted that into an email to send to a yahoogroup that I setup for just that purpose. This doesn't help you much, but the email group at least worked well as all I needed was a web browser to use webmail from my ISP.

Some of the places I used coin operated PCs that didn't have a floppy and were security restricted, so I could only do stuff via a web page.

I can make the code available if anyone is net savy enough to get it up and running. It allows for each day's ridetime, distance, average, max, towns visited and some comments. The mysql code would then keep the cumulative ride automatically.

have a look at www.bikeforbibles.org/calendar.html if you like. I hope to add a couple of hundred images to these page soon.

Have you looked into pocketmail? It is real popular with long-distance hikers and I have read of touring cyclists using it also.Honestly I am not real familar with the details but I believe it is good for email and connecting to the internet in a pinch and is very compact and lightweight.I believe the website is www.pocketmail.com check it out yourself because my tech knowledge leaves something to be desired .
