Folding Bikes - Exile on Drain Street

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I don't like living in the English countryside. You can't get a decent Latté, and it smells funny.
Belting along the poo-strewn country lanes today, with a fine aerosol of cow-ordure spraying off my rear tyre, I cycled over one of those round Victorian drain covers the English haven't bothered to replace in 110 years. There was a sudden hiss, and progress came to a halt. A sliver of rusting metal had gone through both sides of the tyre. Tyre and choob ruined.
RUINED!
Net loss: £20.00.

I would bet living in the City would increase your overall cost more than £20.00 each month!

What did the Victorians ever do for us? I mean, apart from steam power, electricity, telegraph, indoor plumbing, accurate timekeeping, accurate mapping, the bicycle...

... the colonisation of New Zealand, and the punitive sack of Benin.. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benin_Expedition_of_1897).
I quite like the Steampunk movement, a blend of Jules Verne ( as portayed by Hollywood) and er, something else.

and of course, the 'Faun' folding bicycle of 1896.

Or the Romans,other than.............................................peace......................
The drain cover was less likely to damage your internal hub gear than a thingy at the back of the bike that changers gears, whats is it called again.

Peace is much over-rated. People spend their money on iPhones, instead of transport infrastructure. Bring on plastic drain covers.

That's true enough. I see all kinds of cool gadgets on the Military channel. Where would we be now without our hostile endeavors?
Now what the heck was this thread about?

I spent four times as much on bicycles than I did on my iPhone, and according to www.ipayroadtax.com, I spent more than that on transport infrastructure. The difference is that I got to choose what bikes to buy, and what internet tablet, ebook reader, camera, satnav, oh yes, and phone to buy, but I had no say in the type of drain covers.

But if they weren't there, you'd fall into the drain. In a similar vein, I don't mind the gap at all in tube stations. If it wasn't there, the trains would grind along the platform edge, and maybe get stuck.
A Disraelia.
Isn't that the term used for Benjamin Disraeli collectible figurines?

Eschew these fripperies. They have no place upon a bicycle.
