Hello, I live in South Africa and since the age of thirteen (about 20 years ago) I've been exploring my city by bike. I think I fall into a small group of cyclists, because I ride an MTB almost entirely on road, and only for leisure, but I like to have top-of-the-range stuff. People have asked me why I spend so much money if I'm not competing, and I don't understand the question. WHY NOT? If someone asks me what kind of bike I've got, I tell them I have a Shimano bike, because those are the bits of precision machinery that make everything work. I have XT wheels, chain, cassette and chainwheel, and XTR everything else. I recently attached a Giant XTC carbon fibre frame to my Shimano parts. I was also lucky to find a rigid aluminium fork with disc mounts. This is apparently not an easy thing to get hold of in Africa.
The most important thing a bike has to be is: Silent. I despise noise of any type coming from my bike. If I want to make a noise, I'll drive my car. Chain noise is unacceptable. I use heavy wet lube even though most of my rides are in perfect weather. Squeeking brakes are the worst. It's better not to stop. Clicks, when I can't locate the source, have me stripping my bike down and re-building. And you should have seen what I did to my shoes once to stop them from creaking...
