Classic & Vintage - Kinda sorta not really C&V - Do Campy logos come off newer Al components?

I'm rebuilding a classic Specialized Allez with Dura Ace 7400. The one part that I'm really having trouble with is finding a 172.5 7400 crankset; compounding that is that I want to go with smaller than normal rings (38/48, ideally).

I found someone selling aluminum Campy Veloce cranks cheap enough on the 'bay; they look "close enough" to 7400, and they're even compact drive...but I would only get them if I can "de campy" them -- will the silkscreened logos come off with 0000 steel wool or any other method?

Yes they do come off. It will probably change the finish though using the wool though. Or you could let your shoes do it naturally. Or just let it go and admit you ride a little campy, I promise no one will look down. :lol:

Also be aware that some Campy compact cranks have odd characteristics, like an offset 5th bolt hole, special (read expensive) replacement chainring bolts, etc. Not sure if it applies to the Veloce cranks, however.

Personal experience: Veloce crank logos come off no problem with a razor blade. No change in finish. Logos on Centaur and up are applied differently. I stopped my attempts when obvious damage to the finish was apparent.

Paint stripper will remove the logos without having any effect at all on the anodizing. Just dab the stripper on, let it work for a few seconds and wipe it off with a damp cloth.

I did that exact thing with Veloce compact cranks for a couple bikes - I remove the logo to deter thieves. Nail Polish remover and a green scrubber did the trick.

I would love to do the same for my chorus carbon cranks, but I think there is a clear coat over the carbon parts. In any case, I've been too chicken to try.

Yes.
I've read that Campagnolo compact cranksets require proprietary 110mm rings.
But at the price you're paying for those cranks, who cares? Replace the whole thing if you need.
