Man. That sucks. Don't let anyone borrow your girlfriend or your bike.
Rule of thumb.

Worth the 6 minutes just to see that.

let me get this straight.

if you borrow a bike without permission, and it is stolen, you are responsible (obviously as per video)...
BUT if you borrow a bike WITH permission, are you still legally responsible or NOT responsible if permission is given and you lock it up?

Technically, you probably are responsible. But I suppose it depends on the agreement/relationship you had with the owner.

Im relatively new to the fixed gear scene, but that bike doesnt look like its worth 300$ let alone 3500$

xavier853
05-26-10, 08:18 PM
He says its "custom" made by a high end "custom" frame builder. I don't think it looks like a $3500 bike.

Still, if I had a "custom" built bike, I wouldn't loan it out for this exact reason.

Its like loaning out your custom built NJS frame with full dura-ace. You just don't do it.

regardless of quality most new hand lugged/brazed frames are big bucks. Mind you I'm not saying the frame he has isn't good (I know nothing about it) just that not all of these brazed frames are worth the money the builders charge for them. couple that with the fact that none of the De Bernardi frames that I can find are more than $1K never mind $1900....I'm call BS on this one

Dr. Banzai
05-26-10, 09:46 PM
The only thing that he may have been sold is a frame with "racing history" or "pedigree". I've seen some dumb people fall for this. You tack another $XXXX on a part/bike saying it belonged to X or was raced at X.

I can only say that this press is relatively neutral for Bushwick bikes.

He said it's a custom built bike... hinting that the frame was custom, but then he says he already had the frame. Those parts add up to 3.5k? Riiiight.

cc700
05-26-10, 10:11 PM
yeah he may have had his friends at the bike shop value them at that, but they are not worth that. a de bernardi is a nice frame, but not that nice. and unless those are painted zipps or something, his little riser bars aren't driving the price up that high. he probably bought that bike for less than a grand all together if it was in that condition. if not, he's an idiot.

JesusBananas
05-26-10, 10:25 PM
Scenario 1: Bike worth less than 1k, fake receipts. Plaintiff not an idiot, just a lying bastard.
Scenario 2: Guy actually spent $3500 on a bike for which he already had the frame, i.e. $3500 on PARTS. Guy is idiot. Scenario far more likely.

These guys look creepy as ****. Especially the defendant. They're jumpy, unconfident, wiley and obviously mildly r*tarded (for owning a $150 chain or a $3500 work bike).

He was referencing the chain he locked it up with, far as I could tell.

Yea, the last page of the receipt says Nitto Handlebars $50, KMC chain $20, total $3500

I've actually seen the real owner of the debernardi with the bike on the subway maybe a month or 2 ago. That thing is beat. I mean, I enjoy the look of a beat up work bike, but no way that thing is worth 3500.

Yes, but there is a key difference between having a beat up bike because you beat it up yourself from riding so much and paying enough for a Madone but instead getting a "pre-beatup" bike. Kind of like old jeans vs. overpriced "distressed" designer jeans. *barf*

I remember it was nice out that day too. I mean, I've brought my bike on the train before but its only if I meet my girlfriend or friend somewhere and have to go somewhere with them. I always feel like a d**k.

the bike is not worth 3500, and if they use a bike that expensive to run packages and lock up, they are morons.

wow. twenty dollar chain and fifty dollar risers. that receipt isn't suspicious at all.

i wish judge judy had thrown the officer's advice out the window and awarded him the 125 she'd spend on a schwinn from target. that would have made me really happy.

To translate from Nü Fred to regular English: decent springs = titanium

Did you give it a new powdercoat too?

Oh yea oh yea...I powdercoated each of them myself...matte gold, the best colour. Also my covers are made of unicorn furs and they cost about a grand a foot...pretty rare stuff.

Nononono, cool people like him don't spend time on the internet. Cool people spend their time building sweet bikes from scratch, partying, and, er, messengering.

Oh yea oh yea...I powdercoated each of them myself...
Oh. Well that's not nearly as cool as doing it with the chick at Velo Brooklyn.

...that's what she said. (I'm sorry.)
