American soccer players are some of the most coddled losers in the world of sport. Cities fund kiddy soccer leagues. They are given access to excellent high school facilities (weight training, fields, coaches etc) and there is the NCAA component. And yet we can expect them to embarass America once again.

When you see how well we do at other minor sports like cycling and hockey, there's no excuse for the USA Men's team to suck so bad.

Once this group of losers is eliminated, we should take away their passports and never let them out of the USA again. As for the coach, he's a political operator, not a COACH, totally un-qualifed (as per his RESULTS). If the USA soccer delagation was serious about winning, they would have signed up that German National coach when we had our chance. He'd made those pantiwaisted players toughen up and win some important games.

Take the doping chatter to forum 217.

Some of us compete with "gifts" we were given. ;)

I'm not even into soccer but I enjoyed reading your post. I feel the same way about the people running the FEI. The rule changes they've made for international dressage shows are ludicrous and make no sense to people who are real horsemen. I won't go into detail though so as not to totally hijack your thread :)

Maybe if we called it football like the rest of the freaking world we'd be better off.

If the USA team starts flopping like a silly Euro, I say make 'em stay in South Africa for life...It doesn't matter what we call it, we'll still suck. What are our chances against England?

Just be glad you're not Canadian. We offered our team up to Argentina for a bit of practice/humiliation the other day. When they got to Buenos Aires, the Argentine press never even asked them for an interview.

whats the problem. it's not a priority sport. what do you expect from them? you can lose at some things. it isn't the end of the world.

Canada's only 30million, we must have 30million soccer players in the US. We do well at many other minor sports. Plenty of talent, poorly coached. I'm sick of all the hype for these losers. Hockey players and cyclist get much less support and yet we manage to do well. The women are good at soccer. USA Mens soccer should be ashamed of themselves. Yet they're all over ESPN talking about how hard they work and what an honor it is to be on the US team. What honor could there be when they suck soooo bad. They're on their way to the White House for a big Presidentail send off.

they get the profile because the world cup is about to start, second only to olympics as biggest sports event of the world.

I disagree about the German coach. We have plenty of very talented coaches in the U.S. - even ones that would be able to communicate with the players, and would be able to create a scheme that works with their personnel - as opposed to forcing a scheme upon them.

If you were in charge, what roster changes would you make?

I've been in soccer long enough to realize there's quite a bit of politics involved, but that's not unique to the US.

Cycling was this screwed up in the mid 70's. John Howard wanted to chase down George Mount in the 76 Olympics Road Race. The USCF was run as a fat-cat political organization for East Coast also-rans. They lived high on the hog, and allowed losers like John Howard to dominate the US Road Team. The USCF finally hired Eddy B in 1977, he reshaped the team into a bunch of hard-asses that wanted to win, first good result was the '79 Jr Worlds. It's obvious the US soccer coaching is as bad as the USCF coaching was back in the early 70's. It's time for new blood, we've wasted enough time and money on this batch.

Nobody expects them to do well, not even the players. The World Federation made an easy bracket to assure the US makes the big stage, then we become a punching bag. I doubt we can beat North Korea....

No kidding. We were in Australia during the 2006 World Cup. When they lost to Italy, the Qantas pilots were asking any Italians onboard to get off the plane. :)

LOL, we'll see, since nothing changed since the last time, I expect we'll suck like we always do. We played in a made-up bracket designed to get us in, we look better than we are because our qualifier is a joke.

the US seems to do OK every other WC...made it out of the group in '94, stunk up the whole tourney in '98, made it to the QFs in '02, stunk up the tourney in '06...apparently we're due. draw is semi-favorable.

hockey and cycling are comparatively more expensive than soccer as a sport.
Isn't the next world cup in South Africa?

I can't imagine the amount of tourists who will get into trouble in South Africa :innocent:

why does it really matter if they win or not?
As long as the players have fun, meet other professional and skilled players from all over the world, what more is there to ask?
Or is it so you can fuel your own nationalism? Do you have an inferiority complex?

Lemond won the Worlds, he won a bunch of medals at the '79 Jr Worlds.

Were you embarassed by your country's gold medal in hockey and all the nationalism that came with it? If you were, you're a rare Canadian

I'm happy for them, that they won, but I wouldn't think any less of them if they had lost.
It's not like I'm part of the team. I wasn't there on the rink with them, giving it all of my talent and effort.

I'm just a person who watched them play. Actually, I didn't even watch the Olympics.

Maybe this is part of the issue why 2/3 of North America sucks at soccer:

Win a soccer game by more than five points and you lose, Ottawa league says

In yet another nod to the protection of fledgling self-esteem, an Ottawa children’s soccer league has introduced a rule that says any team that wins a game by more than five points will lose by default.
The Gloucester Dragons Recreational Soccer league’s newly implemented edict is intended to dissuade a runaway game in favour of sportsmanship. The rule replaces its five-point mercy regulation, whereby any points scored beyond a five-point differential would not be registered.
Kevin Cappon said he first heard about the rule on May 20 — right after he had scored his team’s last allowable goal. His team then tossed the ball around for fear of losing the game.
He said if anything, the league’s new rule will coddle sore losers.
