im looking for the the name of the part that they made for MTBs in the 80s...

its like a spring type thing that attaches to the seatpost and frame for raising/lowering a seatpost on the fly. when you release the quick release the saddle springs up to a pre-set height, and when you want to lower it again, you release the quick release again, and use you weight to lower it back down.

i think having one of these would be great, bc the MTB trails around here have some hellish descents with good jumps. for the descents i prefer the seat a bit lower (for obvious reasons), but when the trails levels off i like the saddle a tad higher.

i know ive read threads here in which people have mentioned them, maybe someone has one lying around theyd be willing to part with?

I have one somewhere, I'll look for it. It's painted white and matched my white ritchey ultra, sigh...

gmsdc15 is correct. I think I have a piece of one, not the whole thing. Sorry.

If qmsdc15 can't find his old one, you might want to give these guys (http://www.bikeville.com/seatposts.html) a call. They seem to have one but I don't know if it's painted to match or not. Also, in case anyone is interested, there's now a modern day equivalent of the Hite-Rite. It's a bit more complicated and comes as a full seatpost. They have two models with one of them that can be operated by a lever on the handlebar. It's made by Gravity Dropper (http://www.gravitydropper.com/).
