Touring - Has anyone toured on PA's route 6?

We were thinking of taking a trip this year from Union City through the Allegheny National Forest to perhaps Kane, on route 6 in Pennsylvania.

Can anyone give me info. on the shoulder width, the terrain, and was the route bike friendly? Also, did you enjoy the trip?

Any info. appreciated.

Recommend contacting PennDot regional office for shoulder widths. Suggest checking for a PennDot homepage, probably in Harrisburg with links to the regions. I believe there is a PennDot office in Corry Pa. and calling them may help.

Pa. had a program to widen the shoulders for bike riding when the do major paving. So, PennDot should be able to tell you.

I rode on Rt 8 from Titusville to Riceville without problems. Only problem is the wind created by the big trailers. We vacation a Canadohta Lake each year, south of Union City. Rt 6 seemed pretty easy from Union City to Corry.

Better yet, take a Sunday drive and see for yourself.

I used to drive a truck for a living, and I've been up and down most of US 6, in Pennsylvania, as well as in other states.
US6 has a good bit of traffic, although I 80 runs about 40 miles south of it most of the way across the state. The road is fairly hilly, the shoulders vary from small and gravel-strewn to broken tarmac to non-existant. A few papermills and such along the way add to the truck traffic. Towns along the way are mostly small, though.

I have not toured this route but have driven it many times. It is a busy mostly shoulderless road. Lots of truck traffic; less after passing Warren. The road has a lot of twists and turns making it hard to be seen. Personally, I would pick a different route. You could start in Warren - 40 miles to the east and ride to Coudersport; less truck traffic and better roads. Good luck.
