So I'm a college student in NYC and I need a bike to get to school in the fall. I've looked all over craigslist searching for a decent priced bike but I feel like since fixies are the new cool thing in NY they're all way over priced. Any forum members willing to help a brother out?

Motobecane Track - $280 (http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/track.htm)
Kilo TT - $350 (http://bikesdirect.com/products/mercier/kilott_special_ed.htm)

You're not going to get any cheaper than that for a new fixed gear.

First, the prices on CL are waaaaaay over priced.
Then u have 2 options- shop around on ebay for a bike
or buy a non fixed gear bike.

when I said "new" I meant that it was the new trendy thing to do now. And I'm not too worried about my bike getting stolen since i see a bunch of expensive roadbikes chained to posts all of the time and we have a closed campus.

I also prefer a used bike to a new one.

1. Do you go to Fordham?
2. You are where I was about 4-5 months ago. Wanted a beater road bike for college. I purchased a schwinn continental that was way too heavy and not even my size, sold it quick. Next I bought a peugeot that was the right size and ended up costing me about 250$ total after all the better parts I put into it. I found someone to buy my bike for that much and just purchased a kilo tt from a local who never used his for 275$. I'm happy for now, but plan on getting better parts little by little. You'll eventually either a) find a great deal or b) start to learn and like bikes so much you won't care about spending more for a better bicycle. I definitely regret getting the schwinn but I really enjoyed converting and personalizing that peugeot, i'm gonna miss that thing.

Peugeouts make beautiful conversions, I'd love to have a Peugeot frame to move all my parts onto.

as long as the peugeot doesn't have a busted BB or headset, then it's a good candidate.
what isn't overpriced in ny? Be patient on cl - some junk will pop up. lowball

Having sold stuff on New York's craigslist, I would advise against lowballing. Lowballing just annoys the seller, especially if the item is in good condition and is decently priced. And if the seller gets lots of emails, they have no reason to talk to lowballers.
Obviously, if the item is overpriced, then use your own judgment, but don't be too greedy.

Hope the OP spends more on the lock than the bike.

Once I realized that this would probably be the case, I ended up buying a used folding bike on CL for $150 and used that as my commuter, since I could bring it inside. I recently sold it (also on CL) because I'll no longer be living in NY and thus do not need a folding bike, but that is also a low cost option to consider.

I do go to Fordham and I guess I'll just wait it out and see what I can find. I have up until september to find something so hopefully I will find a good deal on CL.

+1 especially the earlier 80's ones with rainbow stripes on the top and seat tube and checkered flag name painted decals. (I still have mine!)

Not necessarily; it's only the french threaded BB cups that matter/ are hard to find / can be expensive to replace.... (did I mention that my peugeot has a french threaded campy BB thanks to some upgrading my grandfather did back when the threading was popular? )

I recently bought a bike the craigslist way. Going to end up costing a decent amount after all the new parts I put on it. If I had to do it over, I might just go to one of the bike shops and buy a used one. I seem to be finding two types of bike shops in brooklyn: The fancy ones with all the neat toys and new bikes and the young staff that is interested in helping you but don't really have any authority over prices and such; and the old school ones with the one shop owner and a helper or two, the place that doesn't look that appealing for window shopping bike parts, but the place where the owner is a little more experienced and able to provide a lot more help. I found that the latter places usually have some used bikes for sale that they fixed up, and they are reasonable in their prices. Considering the tune-up for a craigslist used bike is going to cost you $50, the prices at these bike shops seem even more reasonable.
Two that I have found are (both in Brooklyn):
Bike Shop
514 Court St
Brooklyn, New York 11231
(718) 797-0326
and
Bicycle Station
Between Carlton and Adelphi
171 Park Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11205
(718) 638-0300
I am sure there are others.

Since you are a college student, I'll make some assumptions:
Not a big spender (unless it's books)
Looking for a temporary bike (cool bike is at the rents)
Bike may get stolen (NYC)
May I suggest the Wmart fixies.
Enjoy
