I believe that this has been discussed before, but couldn't find it using the normally stellar performing BF Search...

By now, some of you may have both devices. I'd like to know which one is easier to view in bright light/outdoor settings. I care not that the iPad wins the multimedia category, since I'm not interested in that aspect. Just the e-reader part.

My wife has a Kindle, I have an iPad. As a text only reader, Kindle...hands down. I love my iPad, but I don't read books on it. I DO read magazines on it and that aspect is pretty impressive.

I've used both, own neither, but know people who are happy with both. It's all in how you use it. My inlaws absolutely love their Kindle. For them, the compelling features are:

Screen much more legible than ipad
Unit significantly lighter and better battery life than ipad
They can read email free of charge when they travel abroad

The ipad is a better entertainment device, but the Kindle is better for reading. It's not great for web surfing, but not having to pay for a data plan when they travel internationally is a huge plus.

If you're looking at a Kindle, check out the Nook at Barnes & Noble instead. It seems to me to be a better reader.

First, iPads are not eBook readers. Their screen is more along the line of an active screen that can display well. Of course, this will be harder on the eyes for long term use than a Nook or a Kindle which uses eInk which is easier to read, but does not have the fast refresh rate of a LCD.

If I were deciding:

If I wanted a general tablet device, I'd go for an iPad, and jailbreak it.

If I wanted an ebook reader, If I wasn't needing the Kindle per se, I'd buy the Nook. Reason? It runs Android, so it can be rooted and customized to do cool stuff.

Yeah, I'm basically looking for an e-reader. I have a laptop for multimedia/entertainment/productivity stuff.

Since I now have to monitor my kids more closely (peeking through the window ain't cutting it anymore), I'm wanting something to help pass the time, while also being more aware of what the little ones are doing/saying.
