Took the family out to this place yesterday. It is an old turnpike that was shutdown. The road and tunnels are still there. Part of the move The Road was filmed here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abandoned_Pennsylvania_Turnpike

In the middle of the second tunnel. This tunnel was a mile long about 40 degrees inside. We had lights for it. Freaked my 12 y/o out.

Very nice pics...so peaceful. Did you see anyone or any critters out there?

The overgrown turnpike reminds me of the way Alan Weissman describes them in The World Without Us. The History channel did a program similar to Mr. Weissman's story. Amazing how quickly Mother Nature reclaims what has always been hers once we aren't on the scene. How long has that turnpike been out of service?

I think it was 1966. Saw a deer run out of the woods. We went early to beat the heat. Saw about 20 other rider out there. Saw a family with a stroller.

Looks like a lot of fun. I can see why your son freaked out. Total darkness is a scary thing. Now if he was suddenly going over a soft 'speed bump' in total darkness...well...I would have pedaled so hard I would have put myself into an asthma attack.

By simply turning up the brightness on the photo, it can be clearly seen that your youngest son was right to be concerned. May I suggest you take a different route next time.

Looks like a fun day and a very cool place.

I took the kiddos out for a mile ride. They're 6 and still trying to develop everything. They both want to ride 100 miles with Joy and I. Family rides are a lot of fun.

Very Nice ... I'm going to have to check this place out sometime. Not to far from home...

Looks like you had a great time
