Used to ride the single track at night and up here the winter commute often took me down some remote unlit trails... and in the summer I like riding at night just because it's cooler.

The headlamp on my helmet made the whole trip, This trail was a little rough, so had to stop

I have a 10 watt headlamp and a 1 watt helmet mounted lamp for serious night rides...

Friend of mine has done it. Says he once spotted 3 copperheads laying on the trail to keep warm. I hate snakes. Don't think I'll be rideing at night anytime soon!

We have no truly poisonous snakes here... just cuddly little garter snakes which I often see on daytime rides as they like to warm themselves on the roadside.
They are very shy as they are food for many predators (as well as being predators themselves) and will retreat if you approach at a moderate cycling speed... come up on them fast and they don't have enough time to react and this is what turns so many of them into road kill.
And if you sneak up on them you can catch them... but they may bite and spray a noxious substance if you handle them roughly.
They have been shown to produce a mild neurotoxic venom which is harmless to humans as they have no means to deliver it effectively due to their fangs being located at the back of their mouth and even then, lethal envenomation by a garter snake has never happened.

I've never seen a garter snake with a red stripe. I think that might be a coral snake you're holding there!
I did a few off road night rides years ago and I had a blast! I had a nice helmet lamp as well as a bright handlebar light. I still couldn't see around corners like I can during daylight which made it great fun!

I've never seen a garter snake with a red stripe. I think that might be a coral snake you're holding there!

The image is of Thamnophis Proximus Rubrilineatus which is commonly called the Red Striped Ribbon Snake and is a species of garter snake native to Texas.
Up here we have the red sided garter snake which is rather beautiful and a little aggressive and the plains garter which actually has a mellower disposition and will rarely strike.

This has nothing to do with night riding but seeing the red sided garters is one of the joys of going on those early morning rides in the country... in my youth seeing garter snakes was pretty common, even in urban settings, but habitat loss (they are water loving snakes) and pollution seems to have impacted their populations as it has really impacted the population of their favourite foods which are tadpoles and frogs.
I so need to get out into the woods... mebbe I will find some snakes there.
