Foo - is there any comprehensive bike repair/info app?

I'm currently struggling with one thing with my new ipod touch. I just cannot seem to be able to find any bike repair/law/routes guide app. Virtially All of the bike app i've seen are either gps based cyclometer or gps based route guide. Isn't there any that i can install and be able to review repair guides in case my bike breaks down or one where i can download a route info without having to be connected the entire way. Ipod touch is wifi only and i want to be able to use my apps when i'm not connected.

I'm sure there are other users here who could appreciate an app like these and maybe one of you can chime in and point us to this app. Thanks :-)

hmm, well, all my repair info is in my head. There's not much you can do to repair a broken down bike on the road.
On road repair is more like desperation and ingenuity to allow the bike to get you home with the stuff you have on hand.

does the ipod do HTML?
you could just download the entire sheldon brown and park tools websites and load up their web pages.

some things you might want in your repair kit:

cloth tire boots made from old trousers
multi-tool with chain tool
zip ties
spare tubes
spoke wrench
tire lever(s)
tube patch kit

I still want an app that can do that if only so I can learn the details of repairs and general law info. I do NOT have all the repair stuffs in my mind. I could have the basic tools in my repair kits and I will but I still want these apps.

in either case, why is there NO bike reference app at all so far anyway? Maybe someone should contact sheldon brown about using an app as an offline alternative to the site. I would gladly pay like $5 if the app have all of the same info the site have (and updates itself with new info over times, of course). This would be a great way for keeping the site running well financially.

You'll first have to get the "Ouija Boards for Dummies" app.

Seriously, get the Old School format- pape (http://www.bicycling.com/gear/detail/0,7989,s1-21-139-771-0,00.html)r. And this isn't a knee-jerk, smart aleck response. If you should happen to find the app that you are looking for, good for you. But if you don't take the time to actually study/learn that info, what's going to happen when your device gets lost/stolen/damaged? You will be right back to where you are now.

I have that very same book. and I intend to study and learn the info. I just wanted to have alternative source of info. and especially since I will be taking along my ipod everywhere anyway. I might as well get this app for any down time reading or if I happen to lose the book itself. or if I'm stuck in a middle of nowhere town and have to use some home tools. I can try to depends on the info I've studied but I would feel much more confident if I have other source of the info like this app handy. and beside, I like having this kind of info on my phone or ipod if only so I can whip it out and discuss bikes with friends and the like.

To clarify, I am not dismissing the tried and true method of studying and learning how to do bike repairs and safety stuffs from books or simple precautions like a repair kit to take along on a bike ride. I only want to try to find this app for personal preferences. if you happen to think that there's no app like that out there, cool. but that will not keep me from trying to find it. and who know, maybe there's other cyclist here who actually knows of this kind of app.

Just study up on bottom bracket replacement and carry the necessary tools because, you know what, people need to do that all the time in the middle of a ride.

Well, since I tend to over think things and still end up sticking my foot in my mouth, here goes:

1. I have no direct experience with the iPod touch.
2. I have no idea how much memory you have available on yours.
3. I have no idea how big a file that the info contained in that repair guide would be. It would still have to be text with illustrations.

But you mention that you carry a phone with you as well? Here's a thought- have you tried accessing an online site like Harris Cyclery (the aforementioned sheldonbrown.com (http://sheldonbrown.com/)) with your phone? If you have a full HTML browser on yours, then you might be able to find the info using the phone.

I did mention that I have a proper phone and I can access that site well enough with that phone. I am still wanting to try to find an app for the ipod touch since I'm still in the 'new toy!' phase of ownership of it. but I am impressed with how many apps there are and how polished they are. I was hoping for something like that for the ipod touch. I know that having an offline app like that is somewhat more reliable than depending on my phone's connection for the same info. and considering how much hacks and tweaks I've put on my phone itself, my phone isn't really that reliable, heh.

Sheldon Brown will never answer another question directly or grace us with his presence here but he left a hell of a legacy behind him for future generations to tap into when they needed an answer to their bike related questions and sometimes one might find answers to some of life's questions there too.
