Foo - I went to Connecticut and all I got was this lousy...

ERLICHIOSIS :twitchy:
So I'd been feeling pretty ill last weekend, during a visit to Danbury, CT. I'd never felt that type of illness before. Very strong head and body aches, fevers, chills. Felt kind of like a very strong flu... but with no coughing or congestion.
I decided to not take a risk and visited a local family practice place. So, the doctor checks me out, asks me a long list of questions about my symptoms and then asks, "when was the last time you were in CT?".
I say "two weeks ago."
Then she smiles and says "sounds like Lyme disease... or a similar tick-borne illness."
I literally did not say "WTF" but my facial expression certainly conveyed that message.
"But I haven't seen any ticks on me. I have no bullseye rash. I have nothing to indicate I was bitten," I say.
She says "50% of people with this type of disease never even realize they were bitten until they get the symptoms. It's common."
So she prescribes a hardcore antibiotic, sends me over to a lab to get some blood tests done, and tells me she'll be in touch within a week with the results.
Now, as the week went by, I was feeling great. Felt like that antibiotic really did a great job. Did such a great job, in fact, that I got cocky, ignored the suggestions to get rest, and proceeded to get on with my normal daily activities, including cycling.
That may have been a horrible idea. Two days ago, I started feeling a little sick again. Over the past 48 hours I've gotten progressively worse, and at the moment feel ****ing horrible again.
Anyways, yesterday I got the call and the doctor said I officially have ERLICHIOSIS.
I nearly let out a shriek of horror and asked her what that meant.
Basically, it's another tick-borne illness, very similar to Lyme, and is treated with the same meds. So I kind of lucked out in that sense.
it still sucks.
The moral of the story: wear repellent whenever you go from the city into more wooded areas. Also, when you get sick and they recommend rest... GET SOME REST. Don't do what I did.
Oh and also, stay the **** away from Connecticut. It blows and is riddled with ticks

The whole I-95 experience is a drag, and led us to jokingly rename Connecticut as "the Constipation State". Not my cup of tea, but if forced to choose between CT and TX, CT would obviously win out. :D

hmmm yeah, I don't know about that. TX sounds more appealing to me.
Anyways, the hell with I-95 and the rest of the driving experience. That **** was awful. Having a car in NYC was a big hassle, in general. Been car free for about a year and loving it. MetroNorth train is where it's at

I always thought that Danbury was a nice place to visit. I used to do some tech support up there and they wanted to know if I was interested in a job designing things that explode.
It is a nice place...

Car free? TX? I heard there's a neighborhood in Austin, and two families in San Antonio. :innocent:
Between the gun racks on two of every three pickups, (pickups being three of every five vehicles), the Don't Mess with Texas signs and bumper stickers, the brown grass, McMansion sprawl, cricket infestations, tornados, and ladies with surgically attached cellphones running orange lights in their SUV's on the way to the Galleria... I'm well prepared to face life never going back there.
I can't think of any good reason to go to Connecticut...

Whaaaaat? I thought you liked where you live.
CT has some great, quiet backcountry roads with little traffic. Lots of good trails for hiking and mountain biking. We specially train our attack ticks to keep people away.
On a serious note, my poor dog has had Lyme twice, and I've had it once. You can also get Lyme in the Hudson Valley, so you'd probably want to stay away from there, too.

I'm scratching right now! Actually I'm on many forums - one of which is a backpackers forum and I've seen pics of their tents that were just riddled with them!! WITH PICTURES. Ugh. I love hiking, but man alive the thought of getting a tick embedded in me is awful. I watched my younger brother (when I was a kid) basically roll on the ground in pain till my Father finally got a hold of him to find out what the problem was - - and take a lit cigarette to the nasty bug that was sunk into his skin to make it withdraw. ICK!!!

I know it's frowned upon, but I kind of dig ketchup on my burgers. And mayo. And no onions. Bun, patty, cheese, ketchup and mayo. DONE.
it's child's play, but that's exactly why I dig it. Reminds me of tastes from simpler years.
Deep dish is an affront to all that is good and right in this world.
