Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Bike Shop NYC

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Anyone know any good bike shops in NYC. I'm really looking into picking up a used ss/fg since I'd rather buy a good used by than an ok new bike.

Try craigslist.
Most shops will sell you "ok" new bikes or overpriced old ones.
that said, there's a few that at least give great service. My fave is B's Bikes, in greenpoint, since it's very close to me, and the staff is great.
If you're in manhattan, I've heard good things about Continuum.

Never heard of this bike snob
Chari, NYC Velo, Trackstar, R&A, Signature.

Chari and NYC Velo has nice stuff to look at on the walls. Last I heard, Trackstar closed. One of the owners co-owns Boneshakers (veggie/ vegan restaurant in Greenpoint). R&A? Seriously? It is a high end roadie and tri shop that ignores you unless you look like you are going to drop a huge amount of money.
For the money, the atmosphere, the nice stuff to look at, and for a shop that will work with you and do their best to work with your budget, you want Continuum Cycles on Avenue B between 12 and 13th Streets.

It's weird that I haven't seen u yet. Ur pake should be pretty un-missable. I go to B's Bikes all the time. Staff is good, they have some used bikes outside (not necessarily SS/FG)
and yea, Continnum comes to mind next. After that it'll be Chari and Co.

Ichitz, I feel like I've seen you around the way. What kind of bike do you ride?
Went to B's bike the other day to get my front wheel trued. The guy offered to do it for free but I threw them some beans just for the courteous gesture.
nevermind I just looked up at the links

Hey,
You absolutely have to check out Joe Nocella from 718 Cyclery in Park Slope Brooklyn. He's a really down to earth guy and makes some SICK bikes. His website is 718c.com. He specializes in fixed gears, new and old. The best part is that his prices are extremely fair. He doesn't charge extra for parts and the best part is that you get to be part of the build experience. Each bike made the shop is completely different, so you're guaranteed to have a quality one of a kind fixie. I definitely recommend him as a very satisfied customer.

Weird, right? Maybe we just miss each other by a few hours... or even a few minutes. I never hang around too long. Just grab what I need and keep on going.
Also, been sick over the past two weeks or so, so my riding has been kept to a minimum.
Are you usually on the 3rensho? I'll keep an eye out next time I'm around
nah, i'm usually on my kilo and I don't stop by for long either. I guess that's why.
I've also been sick. Something deadly is definitely going around. Can't breathe, kept coughing. Am ashamed to say... i walked up the williamsburg bridge today. sigh.

Hah. No shame in that. Actually, last week, I rode straight to B's to pick up some spacers and then straight back home (literally a 2 mile round trip) and when I got home I felt like I'd just finished an Ironman race. Hyperventilating, dry heaving, about to pass out. Terrible.
I had been feeling better going into the weekend, and went for two relatively short local rides on Saturday and Sunday... HORRIBLE idea. Woke up on Monday feeling like death all over again. Been feeling sick all this week. Went to see the doctor again and got SCOLDED like a child, for not getting proper rest.

I'm surprised I haven't seen either of you guys either (naterod/ichitz). I ride every day, through BK and over the WB...
And for shops I'd reccomend bushwick bike shop (yeah the one from the messenger video). KT (the owner) is awesome and always helped me out with anything I needed, and for a good price. Other than that I'd say Continuum. Other than that, the rest that I can think of aren't going to have cheaper used bikes or work with a budget.

For something as unusual as that I would try an equally unconventional shop like Frank's on Grand St.

any of these shops sell canvas pet carriers? I've tried a few of the shops, ride brooklyn has a wicker one (my dog loves to chew on wicker), but none have had any. If you are in one of these shops and see a simple front bar canvas pet carrier, please post the info.

Been getting slightly better. I rode about 15mi on sat very very casually (like 8mph). And short ride on sunday except I got caught in the rain and completely soaked. Hopefully I won't get sick again. This sucks. But at least I didn't have to get off and walk the WB today. Yay~

You have too many awesome bikes for me to keep track of which one u'ld be
I guess we're all just on different schedules.
oh and westbrooklyn, if you know specifically what u want, why not just buy online instead of finding a shop that carries it? Or u might be able to get a shop to order it for u.

I'm feeling a lot better after a few days of PURE SLACKING. Still not feeling quite there yet, in terms of breaking out the bike again. Giving myself a couple more days til I feel like I'm 100% over the illness, since it wasn't the average, run-of-the-mill flu.
I was bitten by a tick during my last trip to CT and got Erlichiosis. Similar to Lyme disease but with a scarier name. I'm taking some hardcore antibiotics, and felt great after a few days, hence I got cocky thinking I was over it, ending up in me feeling WORSE than when it started. So, yeah, I'm taking extra precautions this time around.
I'm sure once I'm totally recovered and get back on the bike, I'll feel so out of shape, I'll barely be able to get over the Pulaski bridge, let alone the WB

Another vote for B's bikes in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
I got 2 bikes from them, and I live all the way in NJ.

Maybe you can just use a metal basket with some plywood at the bottom?
