I purchased a Trek Y bike and it rides. The real shock is shot (bike rides fine) the shock will collapse but won't go back to normal right away. Takes some time or you can pull it up.

So my question is was the $20 worth it?

Can I or should I invest in a new rear shock?

$20 is well worth it since you said everything else works fine. What kind of shock is it? If it's an air shock, you need to pump it up to the recommended psi for it to rebound properly. If you pump it up and it doesn't rebound, then it's probably leaking air and needs to be serviced or replaced. If you do need to replace the shock, you need to do some research and find out the specs for you to find a suitable replacement. Trek archives and bikepedia.com should get you started.
