Getting out of Dallas, take the county roads on the West side of I-45 - the GDB has some routes you can look up thru Lancaster. You could take the frontage rod but I don't think that's much fun.
Old hwy 75 parallels 45 and is a decent route most of the way from Streetman to Conroe. I haven't pedaled every mile but expect shoulders (dirty) most of the way and reasonably light traffic.
From Conroe in, check with locals.

I can get you through from say New Waverly down around the east side of houston if you want. I live in Kingwood so i know that area (low traffic, country roads). I don't venture into Houston on the bike so if you want a route that parallels 45 through town I'm not it. You didn't say when you are leaving?

2 days? 150 per day? perhaps more? how you getting back?
I did that trip (by car) one weekend back in the '80s while working in Dallas for a month. I remember the little bible rest stops, pretty unique - never saw that before! wound up meeting a pretty older woman in Galveston on the beach named Mimi. a redhead. she was hot and even visited me up in Boston some time afterward. wonder how she is, must be close to 60 by now. I was late to work Monday morning - she made it difficult to leave
