Just got my cross bike. It is a 2001 Kona Major Jake. I got it for a song because (a) Kona is at the end of the season for its 2002 Jake the Snakes, so they have some inventory that's almost two years out of date that they have to unload (b) I'm helping out my LBS with a Web site, so they were, shall we say, very helpful on the price.
This bike is a blast. I was screaming through Mount Royal, our big urban park, yesterday, and got very, very muddy. If I'd known how much fun cyclocross was fifteen years ago, I probably wouldn't have got into mountain biking. :)
The best part of the bike is the frame -- Easton Ultralight -- and the wheels -- 32-spoke Open pros -- and though some of the other components are down-spec [a Tiagra/105 mix], at least I feel I can beat the stuffing out of this bike without worrying about trashing Dura Ace or Record. Besides... gives me parts to upgrade.
I did have two upgrades, though -- a longer stem and a Bontrager RaceLite CX handlebar. The bar it shipped with was trash.
Woohoo!
