Can anyone tell me what size bearings and how many for this headset? I hate loose ball headsets...

I remember that they used larger than typical. Maybe 1/4" for the bottom race and 7/32" for the top.
Why don't you don't have the old ones?

A Google search turned up this: http://www.bikepro.com/arch_products/headsets/ashimmtb_hst.shtml

According to this web site the 1-1/4" XT headset used 22 x 5.5 (0.2245") mm loose balls in the lower race and these aren't a standard size anywhere I know of. The closest SAE size would be 7/32" or 0.2188". Oddly, the 1-1/8" version used standard 1/4" balls.
