First, it's important to realize that a drainage grate, as part of a road's drainage system, is an important roadway feature. It allows storm water runoff that has flowed from the roadway into the gutter to be taken away via a subsurface system of pipes or to enter the groundwater through a sump.

Inlet Types

You can divide inlets used for the drainage of highway surfaces into four major classes:

* Curb opening inlets
* Grate inlets
* Slotted drains - Slotted inlets function in essentially the same manner as curb opening inlets, i.e., as weirs with flow entering from the side.
* Combination inlets -- Combination inlets usually consist of some combination of a curb-opening inlet, a grate inlet, and a slotted drain. In a curb and grate combination, the curb opening may extend upstream of the grate. In a grate and slotted drain combination, the grate is usually placed at the downstream end of the grate.


Any changes made to a grate must take hydraulics into account. A grate must let water pass without allowing routine types and amounts of debris to clog the inlets--and without trapping bicycle wheels. Many traditional parallel-bar drain grates have slots wide enough to swallow some wheels.

As I recall, you live in a neighborhood rife with bike thefts and that even sheds and garages are penetrable. :eek:

JfB, You words regarding my neighborhood are a tad harsh. Although my beloved Trek 1000 was pilfered, I wouldn't call my area "rife" with crime! I like to think that like the KohiNoor Diamond, sophisticated planning was used in the plot to have my precious bike. Now granted, as a result of some lax parenting in town some of our youth have been falfaffling off the straight and narrow, and my new bike resides in its own room in my house, it is not as though I need sleep with a pistol under my pillow! Why, we freely leave our pumpkins on the porch every Halloween and are never in fear of finding them smashed on the street in the morning! I live in a quiet community best known as vacation retreat of poet Walt Whitman! "Rife", indeed!
