Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Fixed gear Freestyle build and questions

Hey everyone,

I just joined the forum but have been reading for quite awhile. I have been riding fixed gear bikes for about 8 years now. I commute to work here in Cleveland, OH, ride the metropark trails everyday, and overall can't seem to ride enough. Anyways, until now all of my builds have been very utilitarian and based around commuting and exercise functionality. But now I have the craving to freestyle. Similar to when I was in highschool a while back and would drool over dirt jumping bmx bikes with my buddy, wishing I could pull off the stunts the pros did.

So I have started a fixed gear frestyle bike build and I would love anyone's input and or criticism/help. The build is based off of Leader Bike's LD-729TRK V2 trickstar frame. It was the best frame in my mind for the money and one of the few freestyle frames made from someone as tall as me (6'2"). I would have loved to get a gorilla kilroy but, they just were too small.

SO with out further ado here are the components I have for the bike and I would like to hear any input or changes you would make. I am not opposed to selling any of these components and getting something different (except the frame or fork).

Oh yeah... Quite O' bit of beer to help with frustration as I inevitably will jack something up while building and tuning.

Well you might consider a MTB or BMX crankset, they're built to withstand impacts better if you plan on taking drops at all. Also I might look into the Chicago Wig 3in straps over the holdfasts. Being that thick with dual adjustability you can have the front edge of the strap a little higher than the back providing a better fit and "protection" from having your foot slide forward on the pedal.

Curious that you're using a veep front and B43 back. Why not B43 around? Is there a specific reason for that? Brake too? On a trick-bike why? not criticizing, again I'm just curious.

I'd just stick to a set of veeps over b43's. You won't break veeps and B43's are heavy as hell. Run a front disc brake and get a hollow compressor bolt 4 awzmness.

Get chukkers is you plan on doing a lot of gaps.

okay, so I am running the deep v on the front so i can run a front brake. I an running the brake line through the fork so bar spins are still in. I wanted to run a disc brake, but i didnt know what fork would work? I saw the DMR OW fork, which can run a disc brake, but i was told it would not fit a large diameter 700 tire. also, i know the b43s are heavy, what are veeps? as pointed out by johhny B.

Oh and the front brake. I guess I am so stuck on running a brake b/c I am an idiot and there are other idoits out there on the road the few times I will be riding with friends locally. I know it is dumb, but I have had too many run ins with cars pulling out of alleys it makes me sick. If push comes to shove I will/can remove the brake.

Be like Redline and pott's mod a disc brake if you want to do barspins

Sweet, keep the brake. If you're not doing to big of drops then I would also just go Veeps around. They'll be plenty strong. If you do want something stronger I would go with a Chukker over a B43.

taken and accepted how about shimano deore mtn bike crank set. I have one and could switch out the outer chainring which is 44t for a lower toothed ring.

I think the deep v all around is a great point. chukkers will be future investment when I destroy what I am running/get good enough/gutsy enough to do some crazy stuff.

Cranks should work great as long as the chain-line remains true. You might not hate a 44/17 ratio though. Try it before you buy another ring (if you have to buy another one that is). Thats just under 70 GI...

I was going to suggest a Potts mod, but I see you already have it planned.

I didn't see anything special for it in your parts list, but something like this (http://www.danscomp.com/309015.php) will make the Potts mod easier.
