Bicycle Mechanics - Crankset is creaking under power

Recently the crankset on my cross bike (Fuji Cross Comp and FSA Gossamer) has started creaking when I get up and push power though it. I thought about taking the entire thing apart and regreasing everything but I wouldn't like to spend a lot on the tools required. Would it be necessary to take apart the BB?
What is a good grease to use in this situation?

There are a few things to check...the bottom bracket cups need a little grease on the threads, which will help prevent creaking. If they are not tight enough, that could cause creaking as well.
Also check the pedals for play and make sure they are snug, it could be that simple.
I dont think the bottom bracket is at fault here, probably just the threads in the frame and on the BB cups that are creaking. Normal bike grease or marine bearing grease would be fine. I use Park polylube 1000, I bought the 1lb tub, more $ than marine grease but I like it and It should last me a LONG time...

Do you need any special tools to remove the cups? It is a MegaExo BB type if that matters.

I also thought I had this problem recently and was worried. I am not a mechanic, but after I cleaned and lubed the chain it went away. Apparently the chain was covered with grit and grime after just a short time riding on the city streets and it was causing a creaking sound.

Last week I cleaned my drivetrain with mineral spirits and it pristine. I am pretty sure it is something with the crankset or pedals because it only does it when I put power through it. Also I can feel the creaking go through my shoes if that makes any sense.

A very common cause of creaking in the external bearing type of BBs is not greasing the shaft where it contacts the bearings. I believe you only need a set of allen wrenches to remove the crankset to allow you to clean and lube the shaft. If you want to remove the cups, you'll need a tool for that. I have the Nashbar one similar to the Park BBT-19.

Thanks for the help everyone. I removed the crankset and put Polylube 1000 on the ends of the shaft where it touches the bearings and also where the left side crank arm connects with the shaft and the creaking has gone away.
