Sorry if this has been asked a million times before, but can i use a 9 speed r/d on a 7 speed cassette? Will my normal ezfire 7 speed shifters work with this set-up

cassette: Shimano TZ 7
new derailleur: http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/RD604A01-Shimano+Lx+Rd-M580+Rear+Derailleur.aspx or http://www.jensonusa.com/store/sub/1565-Derailleurs+Rear.aspx , anything of that sort.

As long as you stick with a Shimano derailleur you'll be OK.

Rear derailleurs guide the chain by the center of the link so they are unaffected by chain width.

The only other issue that comes to mind is chain width. For sure a Tiagra RD won't work with an old 5-speed chain - chain hangs in the brackets holding the pulleys as it's too wide. I think I read somewhere, though, that a 7-speed chain is narrow enough not to be a problem.
