We need to find my son a new road bike since he's outgrown his current ride. Unfortunately, our choices here where we live are limited to two shops that carry Trek, Specialized and the occasional Giant. Since Ft. Collins is only 5 hours away, I was thinking about hitting the highway to check out the shops there and was hoping to get folks' insights about other shops in the Ft. Collins' area that should be stops on our journey (or if there is anywhere that we ought to avoid). Thank you in advance for your help!

The most obvious is Performance Bike. You will likely get the best deal on a decent bike there. They do have service as well. If you want a more customized and perhaps more overall bike savvy dealer, there is Lee's Cyclery on Harmony Road (though I don't know that much about them personally). If you want a used bike (and theoretically save some cash) you can go to Recycled Cycles on Mason (I think)......though from what I could tell they are quite proud of their pre-owned lot and you won't necessarily save as much as you think you should. My personal experience is with a small shop in Greeley called International Bike. They always treat me well there. There are couple in Windsor too, but I would recommend avoiding them because of relatively higher markup and a higher local sales tax.

I think Peloton (off of Harmony) carries Specialized; I've heard good things about them. Lee's carries Trek but I would stay away. I've had pretty lousy experiences there. Their sales staff isn't great and their service is hit or miss.

There are some cool other shops you might want to check out. Full Cycle and The Cycologist come to mind. I've heard really good things about the Cycologist but nothing about Full Cycle.

there are two lee's cyclery locations in fort collins, one in old town and another on the south end of town at harmony and lemay, i am a huge fan of the south store. the north store is a bit guilty of bike shop attitide, but the south store is extremely f amily friendly and its also huge.

Lee's is als a big supporter of cycling in town, sponsoring several teams, as well as events from races, to education and safety, to family rec rides. cannot say enough great thingss about them.

performance is staffed by nice folks, but its sort of a dreary and cavernous corporate hole without much personality, and i dont have a ton of faith in their shop.

peloton is a nice shop, i have friends who work for them and ride for thier team but have also had some iffy customer service there.

There is also the Road 34 bike shop on Elizabeth that I've heard good things about. And I'm not talking about the bar next door (although they've got some good times too).

-Peloton bicycles on Harmony and Zeigler(?) carries ONLY Specialized bikes and accessories.
-The Cycologist in Old Town Ft. Collins on East Mountain Ave. carries some odd brands like Bianchi, Salsa, etc.;not a large inventory of bikes but they are the most friendly/knowledgeable in Ft. Collins and will talk to you about anything.
-Full Cycle on S. College Ave. is brand new and is a huge store; carry a huge inventory of bikes along with high-end bikes like Eddy Merckx, Cervelo, etc. Also very friendly employees.
-Performance bikes in University Plaza: go to them LAST, they are not that friendly, stuck up and not very knowledgeable about much, alot of "uhh's and um's" when asking about local rides, parts, etc. They also only sell Scattante and Fuji bikes.
-Lee's Cyclery is also friendly, but not sure what their inventory is since I haven't been in there in a while.

also new in town is Pro Velo. really cool shop with a concentration on higher end road and MTB and nice quality commuter bikes and accessories.

theyre near the mall in the foothills plaza. nice folks and the decor is snazzy and the inventory is pretty.

I've never been to the Ft. Collins Full Cycle, but if it's anything like the Boulder stores, then they are fantastic. I believe Giant and Felt are their main brands, but I think they have some other stuff as well.

I know this is a late reply but if you don't mind driving to Loveland my little brother works at Rocky Mountain Cyclery in downtown Loveland. Everyone there is really nice and helpful. That's where I picked up my bike from.

There are many bike stores in Fort Collins: ProVelo (Cannondale, Jamis), Peloton (Specialized), Lee's (Trek), FullCycle (Giant, Kona), Recycled Cycles, REI (Novara, etc.), even Rocky Mountain/Spring Creek Recumbent (recumbents obviously), The Touring Store, and many many others I've never been to.

There's a Trek Store on Eisenhower just east of I-25.... Just stopped by to check out a Portland last week. They had great service!
